SALZBURG ACTIVITIES
We are doing a loop from Munich. We are going to head to Salzburg early on Saturday morning (arrive Salzburg between 9-10:00. We will be staying at a B&B on the outskirts of the town. In an effort to plan our trip realistically I would like to know approximate times to do the following (I know everyone spends more or less time depending on their interest):
Fortress City of Salzburg and some of the Sound of Music sites Salt Mines (Hallein) Drive out to Lake District Sunday morning we will attend an early Mass and then head to Garmisch for the night. Monday visit Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein and then to Munich to catch 8:45 pm flight. Any responses will be appreciated. |
Hi ky,
City of Salzburg - 1.5 - 2 days. Drive out to Lake District - 3 days We stayed in Hallstatt Not going to Hellbrun? http://tinyurl.com/2g8ao3 ((I)) |
Unless you are planning to go up the zugspitze out of Garmish you might consider going on to Oberammergau for a charming place to spend the night and a little closer to Fussen for your next day.

AisleSeat,
We may go up if the weather is nice. However, for me it's more of an emotional thing to see a little of what my son saw 9 years ago on his 21 day high school trip. He stayed at the Gasthaus Fraundorfer, which is where we are going to stay. It is run by a family that has ties in our area. The main purpose of this quick trip is to just get an overview of the areas. I know we will not be able to see everything but will see as much as we can. We don't mind being busy. I have an idea of what we want to do and will just move at a comfortable pace and get in whatever we can. |
Ira,
Yes Hellbrun is on our wish list of activities. We figure if we arrive in Salzburg between 9-10 am, we will have 12-14 hours to experience Salzburg. I know we will not see everything but we will see as much as we comfortably can. I believe we will get into Salzburg, stop by our B&B and leave the car there and take the bus into the city. We will visit the fortress, Mirabell Gardens, walk past the abby and see whatever else we can in the city. We are not big into museums so that won't take a lot of our time. We will then take the bus back to the B&B and pickup our car and head to Hellbrun. If the weather is bad we may do the Salt Mine. IF the weather is sunny and warm we will try to see Mondsee and St. Gilgen since we will have a car. Since we don't have specific plans in Garmisch, if we want to see/do more in Salzburg we will stay Sunday morning and head to Garmish in the afternoon and enjoy dinner at Gasthaus Fraundorfer and then Monday morning head to the castles near Fussen. We will just see whatever we can and enjoy the scenery when we are driving. |
Hi K,
Check out the Salzburg card. www2.salzburg.info/sehenswertes_281.htm I think it gives you a free ride on the boat and admission to Hellbrunn. You can take a local bus back to town - about 7 min walk from the palace. Do stay until Sunday morning. You don't have enough time to visit Salzburg and drive out to St. Wolfgang. ((I)) |
I am of the "less is more" persuasion. So, I'd say if you only have one day for Salzburg, spend it IN Salzburg. It's hard to see all of Salzburg in one day (I wouldn't even try), much less getting out of traffic and heading to/from St. Gilgen/the lakes area.
I'd suggest you get a one day bus pass (around 3.4 Euro from the machines) and consider picking from among the following: 1. Bus to Schloss Mirabel and take in the beautiful gardens. 2. Bus or walk to the Altstadt and have a leisurely coffee at Bäckerei/Kontitorei Fürst (originator of the Mozart kugel) 3. Take in the Dom (Cathedral) and one or two of the other churches. 4. Have lunch at the Stiegelbräu outdoor beer garden (if warm), halfway up toward the fortress and overlooking the churchtops and city. If you want a fancier meal, try the Stiftskeller St. Peter, first mentioned as a restaurant in the year 8 or 900s AD. They have a Saturday Mozart performance and lunch starting in May http://www.haslauer.at/ 5. Go to the Salzburg museum and take in the new Salzburg Panorama--a 360-degree artist rendition of Salzburg from around 1300AD (I think), coupled with this viewer thing that shows you that site today. 6.Go up to the fortress and take in the marvelous views 7. Shop on Getreidegasse--narrowest shopping trip in all of Europe 8. Visit the cemetary at St. Peter's and the catacombs if open 9. Take a bus to the Augustinerbräeurie and have a liter of their fine beer and food from one of their kiosks (roast fish on a stick is an option--really) 10. Finish your day with a concert at Schloss Mirabell if you didn't take in one earlier. http://www.salzburger-schlosskonzerte.at/en/index.htm Luz Leskowitz is a world class violinist and brings in artists from around Europe to accompany him. 11. If you opt out of an evening concert, consider having a drink at the rooftop bar of the Hotel Stein, across the river from, and with a truly awesome view of the fortress bathed in light. If you do that, you'll violate the "less is more" rule, but a subset seems more do-able and enjoyable than shortchanging this lovely city and trying to squeeze in the lakes for part of an afternoon (an equally difficult task if you did on that on your Saturday). |
Oops. I can never spell brewery correct in German: Augustinerbrauerei is correct (I think)

Thank you all for your replies thus far. I think we will concentrate on the city but as a total Sound of Music fan I really want to see the church at Mondsee. We will have approximately 12-14 hours to visit Salzburg so I'm thinking we may drive straight out in the morning to Mondsee, visit Hellbrun on the way back and drop our car at the B&B and take the bus into town. We will then spend the rest of our time in the city. If it's rainy we will probably do the Salt Mines.
