This is not meant to be a snarky question. I am genuinely interested, partly because of another thread that asks what kind of travelers people are, i.e., what they like doing.
Why would someone go to a salt mine? Would they also visit salt mines elsewhere (like St Louis)? Are they interested in other salt-producing facilities (wells in Louisiana, those colorful evaporation pans when you land in San Francisco)?
I love visiting supermarkets and dime stores in other countries, so I am not being superior, just interested.

The salt mines are very unique from a geological perspective. We enjoyed our visit to the one in Hallstatt. It is just something interesting to do.
We have visited the giant Eisreisenwelt ice cave in Austria, Font de Gaum in France, the salt mine in Hallstatt as well as numerous caves and caverns in the US. Again, just something as a nature lover that we enjoy. To each his own.

Because they're wonderful; at least the one outside Krakow is. Beautiful carvings, interesting history. And you feel so good when you're in the Krakow salt mine. They run a 17 day respiratory therapy clinic because of the pure air.
I'm so glad I took the salt mine tour! I went in part because, as far as I know, there is nothing like it where I live and in part because I looked at the web site and the photos were fabulous. Although I love salt I'm not particularly interested in salt facilities.
I also tried the rose petal jam (in a jelly donut) although I don't like the smell of roses nor any synthetic rose smell. But since it was something that was native to Poland or the Krakow area (not sure which) I tried it. I didn't like it but I wanted the experience.

We loved the salt mines! Went with 3 teenagers and all still talk about it! Went to 1 near Salzburg. First you climb up stairs several stories and the vistas are beautiful. You change into a white jump suit and board a train. Then you slide down ramps to get into the mine. Then you board a boat /raft that takes you through the flooded chambers and underground we passed into Germany! They give you a brief history and I didn't realize that salt was extremely expensive and helped establish Salzburg. They flooded the mines pumped out the water and dried it to remove the salt. It was a perfect break and something so different.Check these out

I have met many people over the years whom have done the salt mine tour and remember it fondly. We have four small children and are 'surprising' them with the white jump suits and slides. I care very little about the salt, but more about the experience and memories!
Still wondering about the availibilty of lockers for our day packs. Does anyone know if they have them, how large they are, and the cost? Thanks!

You might want to email the salt mines you plan to visit. The one we went to in Hallstatt had lockers in the room where you put your jumpsuit on. Since we couldn't bring a bunch of stuff with us on the tour we left it in the locker. No charge.
