Salsbury & Stonehenge

Has anyone taken a day trip from London to Stonehenge? If so, how did you get there and was it worth it? I will be in London for a week, and I want to try to fit alot of stuff in.

Hi, Elisa. A lot of folks here will tell you that the visit to Stonehenge isn't worth it. I didn't make a day trip but approached it by car and so had a different perspective - crested a hill, there it was sitting on the plain, timeless in the early morning light. Maybe it depends on how mystical a person you are. You could do it in a day easily but if you only have a week in London, to do only one thing for an entire day hardly seems worth it. There are trains in that direction, then buses, I think, and probably any number of tour organizations have day trips. If they combine it with something else it might be worth it. Have a fun trip whatever you decide.

By public transport, a trip to Stonehenge will eat up your whole precious day and you won't be able to get very close, anyway.

BUT Salisbury, Avebury, Old Sarum, etc. are nearby so if you rent a car or join a tour it can be a very pleasant, enlightening day in the countryside, a nice change of pace from the city. Astral Travels runs an all-day tour that enters Stonehenge at sunset after the tourists have left and we found this "Special Access Tour" quite exciting.

We took our kids to Salisbury/Stonehenge on a day trip from London last January and loved it. Definitely worth it. We took the train to Salisbury and then a short bus trip (easy connection at the Salisbury train station) to Stonehenge. After Stonehenge we returned to Salisbury and wandered the town and then toured the Cathedral. There is an original Magna Carta there also. The town of Salisbury and the Cathedral alone are woth the trip. We made it home in time for dinner and theater that night.

Elisa,

We went to Salsbury on a cold rainy day in November and I will admit to being a little disappointed in Stonehenge, but the cathedral in Salbury is one of my favorite in Europe. The architechture is amazing. I think the combination of the 2 things makes it worth the trip if you are willing to do the organized bus tour the previous poster mentioned. We stayed overnight, but I would not recommend it.

Have fun!
Aileen
