Salerno to Paestum Complete Bus Schedules
Complete (?) bus schedules between Salerno and Paestum can be found at
www.infopaestum.it Note in particular the CSTP buses which depart hourly from Salerno and reach Paestum in about 60 minutes. Only a handful run on Sundays. There is also train service to Paestum, which is faster than the bus, but less convenient, as the Paestum train station is roughly 1 kilometer from the temples. Buses stop much closer to the temples and archeological museum. www.trenitalia.com Paestum can easily be a daytrip from Salerno or even Naples, although there are many good hotels nearby. |
Hi GAC,
Good to know. We took the train. The walk to the entrance was pleasant, along a tree-lined country road. At the corner is a little cafe, where we got a nice Salade Caprese with home-grown tomatoes for about 3E. |
Good information GAC,much better by local bus.

If making a day trip from either Rome or Naples to Paestum, the train is definitively the way to go. From Naples, there are local trains (no reservations) direct (no changes) to Paestum. From Rome, you need to change trains at Naples Centrale.
If making a day trip from Salerno (or even Amalfi by connecting SITA bus), the bus would be a slightly better option, or perhaps even a combination bus/train in different directions. The walk from the temples to the Paestum train station takes 10-15 minutes and is quite pleasant, but not under the merciless summer sun. Better to take this walk in the early summer morning. |
From my experience I think the train's a better option than bus from Salerno to Paestum, GAC.
Maybe I picked a bad day but the bus ride took 1.5 hours in slow traffic. The return by train took maybe 35 mins. Even with the 1km walk it was much quicker. Personally I'd choose the train every time ... Steve |
Steve: you raise a valid point which should be kept in mind by prospective travelers. I too would be inclined to take a very early morning train to Paestum, but on the return trip, I might still be tempted to take the bus (particularly if the schedule worked out well) in order to avoid the 1 kilometer walk under the rays of the merciless afternoon sun, knowing that traffic on the Statale (highway) could be slow. Also bear in mind that the train station at Paestum is unmanned.
