salerno/rome train question
 

Ok if one is traveling from Positano to Rome thru Salerno...the earliest ferry one can take is 10:00 am...the next connection in Salerno would be at 11:40? which is an ES, I believe...How busy would this one be during the week...trying to determine if I should reserve..... as the ferry in question may or amy not be running because of weather..how long is the ferry in route as this is not the fast one? Thanks

Salerno is a relatively quiet train terminus, not as bustling or chaotic as Napoli. I have never had to reserve a ticket on the Rome-Napoli or Rome-Salerno routes so I think you should be fine, esp during the week. Not sure when you are going...is this during the spring or summer or when?

The 1142 from Salerno to Roma starts its journey at Reggio di Calabria. Most of the fast trains from Salerno have come from Calabria or Sicily - Salerno station is not a terminus.
Boat schedules change according to circumstances. Coop Sant Andrea (www.coopsantandrea.it) advertise a sailing at 1000 from Positano, taking 1 hr 10 mins; Metro del Mare (www.metrodelmare.com) has last summer's schedule with an 0945 sailing to Salerno in 50 minutes, but landing in the port far from the station. The boats are run by various operators who frequently change schedules - it's not a fixed timetable like a train service.
Depending on the date you're there, it might be best to reserve the train a couple of days in advance, but to watch the weather and have an alternative plan (bus to Salerno) in case the weather is bad. The next train is an intercity which gets to Roma two hours after the Eurostar - would this be acceptable alternative if you're delayed?

The thing is ..I would miss that train if I took the bus and it would take so much longer.. and it would be better to go bus to Sorrento and circum. to Naples to the train...dont want to do that but it would be quicker..I am going to try to do the St Peters self tour that afternoon and the church closes at 7....The best hing would be to play it by ear and not get the ticket but you have to for the ES dont you ...how far in advance?

I've purchased ES tickets (Rome to Naples) 10 minutes before departure but had to run to get to the track and board.
