Salamanca - hotels and recommendations
We are planning a trip to Salamanca in June and wondering if anyone has recommendations for inexpensive hotels in the area. We will also have several days afterwards to travel around the region and would love to get some ideas from people who have been there about a few of your favorite places to visit.
Thank you! |
La Alberca, and a little village very near from there, Miranda del Castañar :) Both of them are beautiful, Miranda is quieter than la Alberca, not so many tourist ! But in June still is not high season so you will have a nice time, sure !
Bejar and Candelario worth the visit too and , of course, Ciudad Rodrigo, the Cathedral is beautiful !! I can't tell you about hotels because I went to family and friends houses in Salamanca. My favourite places in Salamanca are Plaza Mayor and the Old University and one lesser known : el Huerto de Calixto y Melibea (it's actually a garden with a view over the Tormes valley), it's near the cathedrals. Hope you have a great time there!! |
We stayed at the Hostal Plaza Mayor, situated in one of the corner entrances into the Plaza. Rooms were very small but luxurious, and people were very friendly. They prefer you to speak Spanish, but seemed to understand my husband when he spoke English.

The Hostal Catedral is on Rua Major near the cathedral, has about seven rooms available, and cost 50€ per night for a double room. The owner was a very friendly woman, the room was in exceptional order with ensuite facilities, and the bed linen was of sensational quality. This was possibly the best inexpensive place we stayed at in Spain.

The bed linen at Hostal Plaza Mayor was delicious too. Is it a Salamanca thing?
|
No, it's a portuguese one :) it's true !! Most people in Salamanca goes to the Portugal border for shopping at the shops there and also the markets and they buy cotton things, linen, table linen...it's cheaper than in Spain and very good quality. Also they buy furniture in Guarda, which is about 30 km inside Portugal from the border :)

We were in Salamanca in May of 2004 and stayed in a High Tech Hotel right in la Plaza Mayor. It was extremely nice with 1 double bed and 2 single bunk beds. We were traveling with our children. That room was about 100e. We had a car so we drove into Portugal, just over the border and found a small charming town called Almeida with some amazing Roman ruins.
