Safety in Venice

My sister and i will be going to Venice in early December. Dusk comes quickly then. How safe is it for us to walk around Venice after dark? Any particular considerations or cautions we should take?

As with any place - stay in well lit, populated areas. Avoid dark, deserted streets. Know where you're going.

We were there just before New Years a few years ago. There were a few times I was walking alone with my younger son. Followed the above rules and I never felt uneasy.

Enjoy!

Don't fall in the canals.

DH & I were in Venice in late December 2007. We had no problem strolling the streets well after dark. Many streets & piazzas were empty, but we never felt unsafe.

Take warm coats, scarves & gloves. Venice is chilly in the winter!

I don't remember many well-lit areas in Venice, and many of the areas are sparcely populated at night. This will either make them magical or terrifying, but there is relatively little "canal" (i.e., street) crime in Venice.

I've never felt uncomfortable wandering anywhere in Venice at night (and "wandering" is the operative word, because you WILL get lost).

Thanks for all the responses. I had heard 'street - canal'crime was minimal but it's good to have some first hand responses. We are putting 'get lost' in our plans for Venice. I hear that's the most fun! St. Cirq's advice "Don't fall in the canals" sound pretty on target!
