Safety in Spain?
What is the level of safety now for American travelers in Andalusia? I'm planning a trip for next summer, but would like to know what to expect. I'm a healthy male and have travelled extensively throughout Europe. I am familiar with common pickpocketing and street scammers. Anything more serious than that? (I was in Madrid about 4-5 years ago travelling solo, and had absolutely no problems either day or night.)

Just got back...perfectly safe.

Everything is absolutely normal, same as you experienced 4 or 5 years ago.
Petty crime is a bit more common in Madrid than it used to be, unfortunately, due in part to massive immigration. Nothing at all against americans in particular. |

I just got back. You'll feel extremely safe. Nothing to worry about.

Just got back from 3 weeks holiday in Spain and Portugal. No problem if you are on the look out and not leave things around unattended.

3 women just returned from a Portugal/Spain independent vacation. We each used moneybelts. We kept 1 credit card and 1 days cash in our purses. We felt VERY safe in all places. Don't accept flowers, etc. from folks in the streets, or they won't leave you alone until you give cash. We didn't personally experience this, but did see a bit of it happening in Madrid around the Cathedral.

Just back from one month in Spain, Barcelona, Valencia, Denia, Oliva, Gandia, Ibiza, never had any problems.
Felt very safe more so in the smaller towns, but the people were very helpful, (except some of the bus drivers)just keep your awareness up. Liz |
