Safest Neighborhood at Night
 

I'm traveling next June with my then 14-year-old daughter. I hate sitting in my room in the evening. I love being outside. I don't necessarily have to be doing anything, but I don't like to retire to our room until I'm just about ready to hit the hay. So, I want to be sure to get an apartment in a neighborhood that is safe in the evenings. I'm not looking for night clubs since I'm with my daughter, but I don't want us to be in a desolate area with no activity in the evenings. I don't mind walking in the evenings to a populated area as long as it's safe to walk back to our lodings after 9 pm. There are a ton of apartments in Paris so I just need to decide what neighborhood to concentrate my search in. How about some suggestions?

We always stay in the 6th, others like the 7th, others the 4th or 5th.

We've never felt unsafe in any of these areas as late as about 02:00

Good, I was looking at apartments in the 6th, but wasn't sure. Do you stay in hotels or apartments when you stay somewhere for a week?

If it is my first time in a new city, I prefer a hotel over an apartment. I definitely count on the front desk to assist me with stuff. I agree the 5th or 6th are both great central parts of Paris. Plenty of people out on the main streets at night.

We always stay at the Hotel Bonaparte, 61 Rue Bonaparte in the 6th. From 128E dbl w/bkfst. It is located near 3 metro stops. Has AC and an elevator.

My Lady Wife won't stay in apts. She says that when she is on vacation that she will not do dishes, make beds, etc. :)

We were in Paris in June (on the Ile St Louis, quite safe there); one thing my wife loved was that it doesn't get dark until after 10 p.m. We returned from the Eiffel Tower quite late one night (arrived home at 1:30 a.m.) and felt quite comfortable on the Metro and in the walk from the Hotel de Ville Metro.

We just got back from Paris. We stayed just of the Rue Rivoli near the Jardin du Tuilerie. We walked back from clubs on the left bank in the Rue de la Huchette area and also from the Rue de Lombards. We felt safe walking at 12:30 - 1:00 in that "central" area of Paris.

I did forget to include the city, it's great that you all figured out what I wanted. Thanks! I'm looking through all of the information. I thought an apartment was the way to go and I'm surprised that some people don't choose it. I don't care about room service...there won't be any dishes...I was mainly making that choice for the cost. The apartments I was looking at were a lot less than the hotels I have seen. I'll keep looking though. I can definitely see some benefit to having the hotel staff to help.

Any of the first eight eme are safe; the 7th, near the Tour Eiffel, would be a super safe area. Lots of government offices and upper middle class residences insure a safe, albeit somewhat staid, environment. Paris Perfect has many appartments here, all with a view of the Tour Eiffel. Pricey but worth it.

Hotel le Clement 6,rue Clement Tel:01.43.26.53.60 [email protected] It's in the 6th where I've stayed almost annually since the early 80s. I love the 6th. Years prior to staying in the 6th, I stayed in many other areas. I feel quite safe in the 6th. I'm female and have been traveling around the world alone since I was a teen. So safety is an issue with me,too. I always go out in the evenings. You'll love the location of the Hotel le Clement. It's right on a square across the street from the Marche St. Germain where there's a market inside. There are a lot of restaurants around. Plus you can walk a lot of places from there and there are 2 metro lines...Line 10 and Line 4. and lots of buses. You can take bus 95 and 96(?) directly to the front entrance of the Louvre and further on to the old opera house, AmExp office if you need it, and the two big department stores...Galleries Layfaette and Printemps where you can get a discount shopping pass by showing your passport.
Plus, you can take a nearby bus not far from the hotel and directly to the Eiffel tower. If you decide on it ask for a room on a high floor facing the street. They are the best rooms. I'm a light sleeper, but I have no problem with a room facing the street there. Plus, I always travel with foam earplugs anyway. If you choose that hotel, and need more help with exact bus numbers and metros to get to the tourist sites then feel free to ask me. But, page me over on the Asia forum as I'm a regular over there. I don't have all of my Paris info in front of me right now. Oh, if you can go during the spring, I find it a MUCH better time. It's much better than June. Your child probably has a spring break. I stopped going in summer over a decade ago. Happy Travels!
