Safest City? Luxembourg.

Saw in the news on Yahoo this afternoon:

May we see the raw data, please? It doesn't mean much to say Luxembourg is the "safest" if the "next safest" only has one more incident of violence per year. In my lexicon, a "miniscule" chance of being assaulted is the same as "tiny" is the same as "vanishingly small."

This is typical yellow journalism - hyping the facts to create interest. Like the stories going around that AIDS is growing the most rapidly among hetero women. Well, that's because they're the least-affected group, so any numerical increase is proportionately larger.

Or "the gap between the rich and poor is widening." Well, duh. If Richman has 100 and Poorman has 10 (the "gap" is 90) and they both increase by 50%, Richman will have 150 and Poorman will have 15, increasing the gap to 135. The gap will have increased by 50%, too.

Don't believe statistics always prove anything.

Luxembourg's only up there because the EU doesn't regard embezzlement from my tax funds as a crime worth pursuing, or bribery of or by EU officials as anything more than a minor daily peccadillo. It's the EU staff who whistle-blow that get punished.

If serious theft from the people of Europe were counted in, Luxembourg would be up there with Strasbourg and Brussels as Europe's crime capital.

This report is accurate at all !

San Francisco is the safest city in the US along side Houston, and NYC is # 39 ?!
I feel VERY safe walking around Manhattan at 1 am, especially in the Midtown area; there are at least two police officers per square feet !

But San Francisco?! give me a break! I never felt comfortable walking along Market street just off Union square towards the mission district where a bunch of homeless guys kept staring at me, and I felt like they could just attack me if they wanted to ! and I never saw a single police officer around downtown SF, let alone the other neighborhoods.

mveet,
do you even live in nyc? i do and though i feel very safe, there are places beyond manhattan. nyc is made up of more than just one burrough. to get a REAL taste of the city, you have to venture just outside of the typical tourist sites. as such a critical traveler???, i would've expected you to know this simple fact.
As for safe cities. . .in most western countries, you will be safe if you are where tourists go, that is a financial investment for the city and they protect the tourists who bring so much revenue to them. If you venture off the beaten path, you may find yourself in places where not much help is around. its always the same motto, be smart and keep your eyes open.
