Safe to leave luggage at Pompeii train station?
We are planning a quick stop to tour Pompeii on our way from Florence to Positano - are the lockers in the train station safe for our luggage?
|
Which Pompeii train station? The one on the CircumEtna narrow-gauge line between Naples and Sorrento, or the Pompeii TreinItalia mainline station? Personally don't know about either possibility but you have two options to enquire about.
|
I believe the CircumEtna - it's abbreviated NA P.GA on the Trenitalia train schedule - we'll be coming from Florence
|
Russ, I don't know about leaving your luggage at the station, but I know there is luggage storage availability just inside the main entrance to the Pompeii ruins. It looked really safe when we were there, though we didn't use it.

I don't think there is luggage storage at the train station (it's tiny), so I'd count on using the storage at the excavation entrance.

Having been in Pompeii just over 2 weeks ago there is no luggage storage available at the Circumvesuviana train station there (Pompeii Scavi). This is on the rail line that runs from Naples to Sorrento. (I never heard of a CircumEtna rail line, I don't believe there's any such thing.) I didn't notice any luggage storage at the nearby entrance to Pompeii which is called the Marina Gate/Porta Marina either, but then I wasn't looking for it.
Russ, confusingly I think Naples has 3 railway stations of interest to you all under the same roof, hopefully someone else can confirm. I think NA P.GA is a reference to Napoli Piazza Garibaldi which is on an underground level. Napoli Centrale is the ground floor level of the same station. I've arrived from Florence on the Napoli Centrale level and from there it's a case of following the signs for the Circumvesuviana (also underground) with a sign in it's station which says Napoli Collegamento FS (I just found out that Collegamento means connection apparently as you can connect to other trains from this station I guess). Take the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento and get off at Pompeii Scavi. The official website for Pompeii www.pompeiisites.org suggests the following to access Pompeii from Napoli by train: - entrance from Porta Marina Circumvesuviana Napoli-Sorrento (stop Pompei Scavi) - entrance from Piazza Anfiteatro Circumvesuviana Napoli-Poggiomarino (stop Pompei Santuario) - FS Napoli - Salerno (stop Pompei) (FS is the older name for Trenitalia) You could leave your luggage in Naples but I didn't notice whether the station had lockers or not. Hopefully this helps. Any additional questions just ask. www.vistaphotos.com |
Hi russk007,
I am interested in the answer to this question also. You have some good feedback but I don't think we know the answer yet. I won't be going til next spring so when you get back please post a "for sure" answer regarding this if no one posts specifically. KieranB has given us some really good help though. I would be interested in knowing if there is secure luggage storage either at Pompeii Scavi or the entrance to the site itself. Have a great trip!! |
There is a manned luggage store facility at the entrance to the ruins near the turnstyle.
Looks perfectly safe to me ... Steve |
thanks Steve for the update.
Is there still "left luggage" anywhere in the Naples Centrale or Garibaldi or Circumvesuviana train station complex? |
Mt. Etna is in Sicily. Mt. Vesuvius is in the Naples/Pompei area. The train you would take is the Circumvesuviana. There are two stations. The first one (if you're coming from Naples) is the closest to the scavi entrance. If I were to leave luggage anywhere, it would be there. I don't know what stations have lockers open anymore. Last time I was in Rome they were closed.

There is certainly left luggage at Napoli Centrale, as there is at other big Italian stations. I have no experience of left luggage facilities at Pompei, but other people have used it and seem to think it is OK.
