Sad news from Arizona: confirming that Robespierre died in July (2009).
In follow-up to a thread on the Fodorites' lounge, I did what many of you did - - and sent an e-mail message to "Tom" who was better known here as Robespierre.
As it went un-answered, I anticipated that it might be an e-mail address no longer being checked.
No longer being checked - - and unknown... to his widow.
Since Robespierre and I had shared telephone communications in 2007 regarding a common bond - - cancer - - I decided that I would make the call.
His now widowed wife confirmed to me that his illness became suddenly and unexpectedly worse in July and he died after a short decline.
I promised her that I would share the sense of loss our Fodor's community would surely feel, with his passing.
She seemed to be happy that I had called, and related that she knew well how much he felt connected to many in this cyber-corner of the world.
Best wishes to all who knew him...
...and a feeling of deep sorrow that none of us could be "there" (here) for him in his final days...

Dear rex, I am so glad you had Robes phone number and made the phone call. I have been afraid that Robes was no longer with us and sadly that is the case. I too will miss him, flanneruk described Robes personality perfectly in my opinion.
My deapest sympathies to Robes wife, two sons and all his loved ones.
I am heartbroken.

Here is the Paris GTG thread which Robes attended, from Sept 2008; and photo link is in that thread.

Robes was such a great resource for all of us non-techies. I remember how he always posted really good deals on products; thanks to him I got a great phone to unlock for European travel and he walked me through the whole process. He was very generous with his time & his considerable knowledge. He will be missed.
