S. Itlay itinery - need help
We are planning a trip in July as follows:
2 nights in Naples
2 nights in Capri
3 nights in Positano
2 nights in Maratea
We have 3 nights left before spending our last night in Rome for our flight back home. Any suggestions of where else to go in S. Italy? We don't plan on renting a car. Is Sicily out of the question?

Hi C,
>We have 3 nights left ...
I suggest adding a night to Naples so that you can visit Pompeii or Paestum and 2 more nights in Positano.
If you are looking for a hotel, we enjoyed our stay in Praiano - 6 km E of Positano.

sounds like you have the amalfi area/southern coastline covered pretty good. I agree with Bob that Sicily is not an option. I would suggest you treat yourself to a little something different. Head up to Orvietto and spend a few nights there and day trip out into the Umbrian countryside...Speletto, Trevi, Assisi, etc...all worth a visit. Only a short drive up from Maratea and a little over an hour but worlds apart from Rome...and much nicer than anywhere else in southern Italy.

we weren't planning on renting a car. We have been to Tuscany before. Is Orvietto worth it? I'll see if there is a train from Maratea to Orvietto. Can anyone tell me what's good about Sperlonga. I'm not familiar at all.
Thanks

Just spent two nights in Orvieto last week...definitely worth it. We did have a car and used it tour the Umbrian countryside which was just spectacular, especially Assisi. The lakes, vineyards, feudal villages, etc. are in contrast to what you will be seeing on the coast for 9 nights. We overnighted in Maratea at the Villa Cheta ( on Navigator Bob's suggestion)on our way to Sicily from Orvieto. What a super villa it was...turning an overnight stop into a special part of our trip. If I were you, I would add a little something different to the itinerary. Umbria has all the charm and beauty of Tuscany...and closer to your final destination in Rome.
