We did Battle and Rye in one day, although we had a car and were staying in Kent.
We toured Battle Abbey and the battlefield (take the long tour out onto the battlefield.) The audio tour gives you three perspectives of the battle (King Harold's mistress, a Norman Thane and a third that for the life of me I can't remember right now!)
After the tour, we had lunch in Battle (very small and walkable.) Having heard that there wasn't much to see in Hastings, we drove through on our way to Rye. Rye is also very walkable, but some of the streets are very steep. It's an interesting old town with lots of character and charm. We stopped by the TI centre and watched the diorama multi-media presentation on the history of Rye. And we sat for a while and watched some people playing bowls (similar to bocci ball.)
