Ryanair Baggage Requirements
 

According to Ryanair website, checked baggage weight requirements are limited to 15kg. If my conversion is correct that equates to about 33lbs. I'm thinking that exceeding the limit would not be altogether that difficult. Does Ryanair strictly enforce this limit? Also, any excess over 15kg is charged at Stg4/06per kilo. Can anyone translate this excess charge for the metrically impaired? Thanks

4 GBP or 6 euros per kilo (2.2 lbs).

The exact use of symbols on their website is as follows:<BR><BR>&pound;Stg4/?6 per kilo <BR><BR>&pound;Stg, as suggested above refers to GBP, or pounds sterling as the abbreviation is meant to imply.<BR><BR>? is apparently a euro symbol. I am mystified how/why this symbol is working in some parts of the world, and not others (or at least I guess that's why no computers in America seem to be able to display it).<BR><BR>Maybe I have mis-interpreted - - could it be a function of NEWER computers now have something different in the character sets (something in the operating system that perhaps its display?) - - and has nothing to do with geography.<BR><BR>Will there never be a ptach for this for older computers. Does anyone have a clue about this symbol.<BR><BR>I realize that this is close to hijacking this thread. I have the euro symbol displayed on the E key, so I have to press Alt Gr. It does not work on this Fodors board, you will only see a question mark. <BR>My computer is a quite new Packard Bell with Microsoft XP.

Daneil - - am I to take it that you are in Norway? Are there ANY websites on which you see the euro symbol - - AS a symbol (as opposed to as an "image")? Yes, I am in Norway and I can see the euro symbol on ryanair´s website and eurostars (fares) and many others, including LP´s Thorn Tree boards. Accessing the euro symbol in Windows:<BR>"On standard US keyboards hold down either Alt key and type 0128 on the numeric keypad part of your keyboard."

Accessing the ? symbol for me is hold down the Alt Gr key and press 4.

the question mark should have been the euro symbol! Obviously it doesn't work on fodors.

I did just what you suggested, and went to www.google.com with exactly this search you suggested - - and indeed the first site it retrieved was <BR><BR>http://www.microsoft.com/typography/faq/faq12.htm<BR><BR>just as you said.<BR><BR>BUT! Google offers one powerful capability you don't find elsewhere -- they have all kinds of pages CACHED -- so even though the page is no longer available (to us here in America?) - - you can still read it if you click on the cached version.<BR><BR>and I read there that Mircosoft basically has NEVER made support for the euro symbol on Windows 95 (and yes, this is what I use for most of my everyday online stuff).<BR><BR>So, I went to a Windows 98 computer - - and sure enough, the symbol on the ryanair page (which is TEXT - - NOT an image) displays just fine.<BR><BR>Conclusion? The software running THIS Fodors site is running on Windows 95 or some other similar (fairly out of date) platform. I don't know how many other computers in the US (or in the world) are still running Windows 95 - - millions - - maybe tens of millions. Interesting tech talk -- but what about the first question: Does Ryanair strictly enforce the weight limit? Also, do they talk a total weight for a family and divide by the number of travelers?

I think they "screen" the weight of your bag with the "arm test" of the counter agent. If it feels like it might weigh over 15 kg, then they put it on the scales. So, I suspect that a 17 kg bag might not get a surcharge. I don't recall paying any surcharge on that trip but it was just my wife and myself, and we were traveling pretty light (though not light enough to get around the blasted FIVE kg rule of BA for the trans-atlantic trip - - had to check rollaboards - - though no surcharge to do that, of course).<BR><BR>But I wouldn't count on "getting by" with a 30 kg bag, nor even two 12 kg bags.<BR><BR>Baggage surcharges are an integral part of how they keep their fares low.<BR><BR>I have flown Ryanair twice before, and both flights were full of students, business people and all kinds of others of all ages. Often making a weekend trip to see family or just a quick getaway. Many of those fly with well under 15 kg.<BR><BR>They have NO incentive to see Americans trying to "get around" Ryanair's collection of baggage surcharges. Those surcharges help keep Ryanair fares low for the mostly European crowd that is making it the fastest growing (and shooting to be the most successful) airline anywhere.<BR>

Ryanair are notoriously strict on their baggage policy - if you're over the limit, they'll make you pay (and it's pretty hefty, too.) If Fodors have indexed them, there's a lot of moans on this board from people caught out by this - but as Rex points out, Americans "doing Europe" isn't really the main marketing aim of Ryanair - it's aimed at those of us luck enough to live close to one of their airports who want to go abroad for a few nights.

This euro symbol thing really has me confused. I even plan to do a screen capture with this symbol ?
