Ryan Air to Frankfurt
 

I purchased a Ryan Air ticket from Spain to Germany and read that Hahn is pretty far outside of Frankfurt. Not a big deal because the next day we were just planning on taking a train to Munich early in the morning. Has anyone taken this flight and are you familiar with this airport. I just wanted to know where we should stay for that one night before we head to Munich. Should we head into Frankfurt and try to find a cheap room (if there are any) or go to a smaller town? We get in from our flight at around 7:00 p.m so was not sure if it was worth travel to far just to sleep for a night. The reason we are not going straight to Munich is because it is Octoberfest and we can't afford to stay there any more nights than we have already booked. Thanks!!

Do you already have your train tickets from Frankfurt? If not, since you have to take the shuttle bus from the boonies where Hahn is, it might make more sense to just take one to somewhere closer to Munich, like Heidelberg; it's only 6 euro more, and 1.5 hours more on a bus, but it's that much less distance to go in the morning, and it's not like you're going to have time to see much of anything, anyway. Another possibility is take the train to Ulm or Augsburg that night. Both cities are on the train line from Frankfurt to Munich and would offer cheaper lodging than Munich and probably Frankfurt.

Ulm is about 2 hours, 15 minutes from Frankfurt and about 1 hour 15 minutes to Munich. I haven't spent the night in Ulm, but it seems to have a sleepy charm that Frankfurt lacks. Augsburg is closer to Munich, but it might have more Oktoberfesters in town.

Bird: just asking, but take the train from where? As far as I can tell, there isn't a train station at Hahn itself, you have to take the bus (or a cab or whatever) to a city in the vicinity, such as Mainz or Frankfurt.

I've never flown in to/out of Hahn, but I would imagine that you would catch a bus to Mainz (or Weisbaden) and then purchase a train ticket. I looked closer at your original post and see that you arrive at Hahn at 7pm and that you might not want to spend a lot of time on a train. Grsing's suggestion for Heidelberg sounds pretty sound.

Sorry about that - I didn't realize it was you I was responding to with that last post. You can imagine my embarrassment. I better call it a day.

It's quite alright; if there was a train station at Hahn, it would make a lot of peoples' lives easier, and I wasn't sure if I had just somehow overlooked it.

Hahn airport is in the middle of nowhere! It's at least 1 1/2 hour bus ride to the Frankfurt train station. There is a shuttle bus, but from what I remember, it doesn't run frequently. I'll never fly into Hahn again because of it's incovenience.

I would get out of Hahn that night. While Frankfurt is 1:45 minutes from Hahn, Mainz is only 1:05. The first bus after your arrival leaves Hahn at 8:15 PM and arrives in Mainz at 9:20. They drop you off at the main train station, and there are some reasonably priced hotels (Schottenhof, Koenigshof, and Hammer) right there.

I have personally stayed at Schottenhof twice; it was OK but, but the second time was not impressive. Koenigshof, right up the street is closer to the station, looks nicer, and costs less. I have not seen Hammer, but I think it costs more.

There is a bus to Mannheim/Heidelberg, but it doesn't get in until around 11 PM.
