My DH and I will be traveling to England next week. Three days in London, one in Bath and then on to Oakham and the Barnesdale Hall timeshare for a week. Saw the posts on lovely villages to see and also the one about Barnesdale and the Rutland area. Very helpful but the most recent on that post was 2005. Anything new in the Rutland Water area we should see? Also looking for info on local places to eat (not fine dining - more pubs, etc). Anyone familiar with fly fishing in the area? Have researched on line about several but am looking for recommendations.

I'll assume I posted info on the thread you mentioned so probably not a lot more info to add.

Main things to see/do would be the Open Air theatre in Stamford, Burghley House, Belvior Castle, the Triangular Lodge, Kirby Hall (absolutely fascinating), Market day in Oakham

Hi Kathy:

Saw your post on the RutNet page (Oakham)...you should be able to get some updated info there. However, the Oakham region, Rutland Water, etc. has been a place we thought quite neat several years back, and would certainly return to it.

You'll find plenty to do and many pubs, most with good pub grub...we recall The WheatSheaf in Oakham as being a first class place with excellent choices, and fun people. I underlined it in my journal...so how can you go wrong?

Thanks so much for your replies. Have made some fishing arrangements - they sound like DH will love them! I fished when much younger but now I plan on bringing the camera and a good book!
janisj - your post was one of the ones I saw - I have printed out so much to take with us! I'll get the knack of the travelling light thing someday - I'm worried my paper will outweigh my clothes! We are truly travelling novices - our only other trip was 4 nights in FLA 2 years ago!
Tried to get tics for the Stamford Open Air Theater several weeks ago (found that on my own!) but it is sold out.
Stu - I did get a reply from a local woman to my post on RutNet and got some good info. Hope to meet up with her during our trip as she works at teh Museum! You are a West Coast boy now, huh? I love where we are but certainly am looking forward to seeing more of the world! Unfortunately we had to wait till the kids were older (youngest is 17) but that presents a whole other set of worries in leaving them behind for 2 weeks! Anyway - thanks for help and I will try to post when we return with a trip report from the novices!!

The Finches Arms pub at Hambleton
The Old Plough in Braunston
The Olive Branch at Clipsham (Michelin Stared pub at reasonable prices)
The Admiral Hornblower in Oakham
The Fox and Hounds at Knossington
The Coach House Inn at South Luffenham

I have purchased and sold last minute tickets via them, usually on the day of the performance.

Fly fishing I know nothing about, other than the main center on the water for it is at Normanton.

I can second the Old Plough at Braunston - we used to go there when my son was studying at Loughborough, just for the food!

during our stay at barnesdale, we spent one day in boston...very interesting village.
