Run Time Errors
Anybody else get a Run Time Error when the Fodors web page first opens up on your browser? It is the only page where I get an error, and it started just after they made the new page changes.
Yes, and when I refresh, it happens also.
Yes, since about a week ago.
Yes, about a week for me too.
me too, glad it's not just me
Yes, me too. I'm glad it was just some new glitch with my computer. Glad you asked.
Make that "thought it was sone new glitch". Sorry.
Yes, and ditto. Thought it was my system. Phew!
Fodor's editors here. Thank you for posting about the error that is occurring on Fodors.com. We would like to fix the problem but we need more information. Can you please e-mail us ([email protected]) and specify what page on Fodors.com this is happening on, and the exact error message you are receiving? <BR>Many thanks, <BR>Fodors.com Editors and Producers

At work on a pc with windows 2000 and ie 6.0 something I get 'run time error at line 48' 'do you want to debug?' press yes and all is ok.<BR>At home on a pc with xp home and ie 6.0 something I get nothing.<BR>Also have pop up stopper at home so maybe the error is with the pop up?
Umm...could someone please explain what a run time error is?
Yes, me too.....a small little square immediately up the first page opening of fodors.com. Whether I click the "x" in the upper right, OR click "yes" (I want to debug) or "no"...it disappears and sometimes returns and sometimes not. Then I just proceed with your page. Glad it's not just MY computer.
Fodors editors,<BR>I'd be happy to accomodate your request regarding the run time errors. But how come you never acknowledge emails that are sent directly to you?
Fodors Editors:<BR><BR>I get the same message...<BR><BR>Line 49<BR>Char 9<BR>Error Expected ''<BR>Code 0<BR><BR>www.fodors.com/forums/pgTopFrame.jsp?fd=2&start=0<BR><BR>PB<BR>
I keep getting the message at the bottom of the forum "done but with errors on page". The caribbean forum has not allowed me to post several messages. For some mysterious reason when I press "send" I immediately find myself on the US forum!!
For those of you still getting run time errors:<BR><BR>If you're using IE, go to Tools/Internet Options and click on the Advanced tab. Scroll down to Browsing, and put a check mark in the Disable Script Debugging box then click OK.<BR><BR>
I get exactly the same message PB is getting - have been getting it for at least a week now.
"bgates" is correct. Follow his instructions and you will no longer have to respond to messages resulting from code errors found within web pages.
Bgates, great suggestion, thanks. I hate that run time error crap.<BR><BR>I promise to stop pirating your software due to your great tip. Danke.

In a fairly simple explanation, a run time error is one that happens because of a flaw or a "bug" in an otherwise functioning computer program that causes a problem to the computer system.<BR><BR>All computer applications, such as one that runs a web site on Internet, operate under the overall supervision of a computer operating system, OS. I do not know exactly which OS Fodors runs, but it looks to me like a version of Unix. <BR><BR>One of the jobs of the computer operating system is to manage several programs (also called applications or processes) that are in progress at the same time. As part of the management task, the OS protects other programs from a program that has a severe bug in it.<BR><BR>If the buggy program tries to do something that threatens to disrupt or damage another process, the OS steps in. <BR><BR>Sometimes the OS shuts down the whole buggy program. In the case described above, it seems like a certain series of control keys can get around the error and in other cases something weird happens. How and why the error acts as it does gets hairy to explain. It is also even hairier to find and fix, particularly if you cannot reproduce the problem. That is why Fodors' editors need highly specific info.<BR><BR>Just telling them that there is a problem does not give them enough specific information to replicate the problem. It is quite possible that the error does not happen all the time; it takes a precise mix of operational conditions to cause it -- a mix that cannot be easily duplicated in single user mode when the users are shut out of the system. <BR><BR>I don't see the error when I access Travel Talk on my system, so I have not experienced it first hand. I am not sure why I don't see it. Perhaps it is because I don't have the latest IE browser. All browsers are quite different under the skin and it is quite possible that there is something about version 6 that tweaks the Fodors operating system and makes it think something is wrong. <BR><BR>I also use Netscape, and I still run version 4.74 because it works, particularly with one of my email servers. So in neither case do I provoke the run time error response. <BR><BR>My practice over the years has been to leave a working system alone. Don't switch to a new model until you can't do what you need to do. If it ain't broke don't fix it.<BR><BR>Hope this helps. But believe me, understanding just how a run time error pops up is hard. I don't think it is possible to understand the depth of the problem without a working knowledge of how a given operating system works. Also, the OS is a very complex entity that requires highly technical skills to develop. If the error is in the IE browser, it will be the devil to trace.<BR><BR> <BR>
Thanks for the explanation of why computer glitches are sometimes so hard to pin donw ... FYI I get the runtime error on IE 5 but not Netscape 4.76
This particular runtime error has nothing to do with the OS; rather, it's boils down to differences in how IE and Netscape intepret Javascript code. Apparently Netscape has no problem interpreting the javascript contained on this particular page, while IE is jumping up and saying "hey, this is no good, a semicolon is missing." By disabling script debugging you're telling IE to give it a rest already.
thanks, worked for me too.
OK, Fodor's, here's the error:<BR><BR>See Line 48 of PgTopFrame.jsp (the page which displays the top menu bar) renders the Talk menu selection. Both the mouseover and mouseout events specify a string constant "/images/hnav/talk_select.gif", whereas the other menu selections correctly specify the highlight/unhighlight methods for the same events. <BR><BR>Apparently Netscape permits you to commit such errors, but my baby (version 5.5 anyway) doesn't.
But Bill, I'm using Netscape, not IE, and I get the exact same error message.
anyone else have problems yesterday?I could not access any of the talk forums although I could access the rest of the site!
Same here--could get to main Fodor's but not talk. It reverted to a Random House page or nothing
My run time error is the same as PBProvence's except I get 2, one on top of the other. Forgot to see if they are the same.
We've been having similar problems, but with both IE6 and NS4.7. Instead of just a run time error, IE6 either just stops short of the full list of resposes or gives a blank page especially on threads with several responses. NS has been giving a network error and tells us to reload page? <BR><BR>This has been happening for about two months and emails to the editors have just been the standard requests for versions and circumstances. Had to borrow my husbands laptop from work to reply to this thread, but it won't access all of the threads either.

THANK GOD FOR BILL GATES AND HIS WONDERFUL ERROR FREE SOFTWARE. OH YES BILL PRODUCES THE MOST WONDERFUL PRODUCTS THAT WILL NEVER EVER CAUSE YOU ANY TROUBLE. THE ONLY THING BETTER THAN BILL'S SOFTWARE IS INTEL HARDWARE.
Another kudo for bgates and disabling the debugging window. I have been having this forever on various web pages. Thanks!!
Puker, I never claimed any of my software was error free. We'd love to make error free software, but we also love getting new products out the door and market share so we can't keep testing these things forever.
