In the late 1980's we met a couple from australia in florence whose comments about italian drivers still make me laugh whenever i think of it:<BR><BR>the man said when he was driving the autostrada in the left hand lane enroute to florence, he looked in his rearview mirror and saw<BR>"eyeballs --nothing but eyeballs."<BR><BR>now that's tailgating!

What is so bad about it? Alot of twists and turns but there is a railing so you won't fall over the cliff. I have been on alot more dangerous roads in the US and Europe. I did hear that it can be tricky at night because there are no lights and tourist's break through the railing and go sailing into the air and land on the rocks below and are washed out to sea and there is no sign of them by daylight, except for white rebok shoes floating on the surface.

1. Have a small car. The smaller the better because the roads are narrow.<BR>2. If you have any phobias - plan on being the passenger.<BR>3. Speed is your friend on highways but not on the coastal roads.<BR>4. When you see a bus pass it on a straight away and NOT a curve.<BR>5. Don't assume people stop at stop lights or stop signs - they don't...but I suggest that you do.<BR>6. Blind turns are common - look in the mirrors for other cars barreling towards you.<BR>7. Don't drink at lunch, you will be tempted by the wine and food - we would get up early so we could get to our destination by midafternoon so the driver could drink. Believe me they needed to after some of those drives.<BR>8. Get the insurance on your rental car. After all the driving we did I actually scraped a wall in a parking lot. But insurance covered it all.<BR>9. Enjoy!!! Amalfi is amazing!!!!

Thanks for topping this fantastic, funny and too true thread! A good chuckle (as I remember cringing more than once on the Amalfi Coast). But oh the beauty of it. If you have to die, well, you are already in paradiso, right?

Very funny stuff, but I have a couple of comments.
We drove it several times. We rode the SITA bus once. The bus trip was infinitely more frightening than driving it in our own car.
It wasn't half as bad as the coast road in California south of Mendocino heading back to SF, where there are NO guardrails and people drive even faster.
