Hi Sherry. Sorry, I didn't notice your question until now. I think it partly depends on how much you like to drive and how comfortable you are dealing with other cars on the road. When I drove on that road up to Peillon, I passed only a few cars; the Amalfi Coast road is a lot more crowded. The main advantage to having a car, IMO, would be to be able to stop and look at the scenery. We could certainly see a lot from the window of the bus, but we kept wishing we could stop and just soak in what we seeing.

Hi Capo. I know me and I know I won't want to do it without a car. So when I make up my mind when, probably at the end of next April, I will let you know and you can keep your fingers crossed. I had passed this post up at first, but after reading a comment about it on another post, I read it. I REALLY enjoyed it. I think we only saw one or two cars on that road to Peillon. So the really one lane road wasn't too bad because we didn't meet anyone going up when we were trying to go down!

you guys are pussies! there is nothing scary about driving the amalfi coast. if you had an alfa romeo you could take the hair pin corners like schumacher! ferraris are too wide and precious to manouver the roads. i must admit that i scraped the side of a nicely done up elvis presley tour bus near positano once. i think the road at cinque terre is much worse!!! there is no barrier on the side of the cliffs.

I've driven from Sorrento to Positano, then took the SITA bus from Positano to Amalfi. It was a mistake. I would love to drive that road. Nothing scarry about it, but to fold the mirrors in is a good idea. The road is very safe, but keep an eye on the scooters. Some people forget that, to drive such a beautiful road is an amazing experience.

I enjoyed the list. There's a great ad campaign for the new convertible Lexus on that highway. I would love to drive it in that, or my SLK.

My favorite comment from our tour guide on the trip to Amalfi when the bus driver started a yelling match with another driver "and sometimes the drivers like to compliment eachother's driving!"

To the top for Dorrie; can't believe it--I found them on the first try after at least half a dozen unsuccessful text searches earlier this fall.

Something to think about: some years ago my Mother told me that a tour bus on one of those roads had a terrible accident. The cause was a pop can which had rolled down the aisle and become wedged some way under the brake pedal. Now, my husband doesn't seem to have any desire to drive in Italy, but at least we could control where the pop can are in our own car!

When you are driving be sure to enjoy the scenery. Nothing will make your passengers more alert than realizinf you are looking over your shoulder at the last village you passed when you are approaching a hiarpin toun with a big SITA bus approaching.

The Amalfitana is much faster at night.

Breaks??? Breaks are for wimps!

i thought that driving the amalfi was a complete gas. had a ball. slso the safest way to pass is going into a 180 degree turn in the opposite lane. sounds crazy but it the only way youo can see whats comming. as long as you can slide the back end of a car around a corner you have it made. if you do this only do it in a high performance car such as a lancia or alfa romaeo. if you want to see the scenes just pull over at the small turnoffs and park the car.

My husband loves the Amalfi drive and has done it several times. But once..we were on our way up to Ravello.. and there is a really hairpin turn... and he wasn't paying attention and swung too wide just as a delivery truck did the same thing coming down the hill. Crunch..... but no real harm done.. we taped up the fender and went on our way.Seems to me there are two situations if you drive the Amalfi like we did in either the spring or fall. Traffic is not bad, so driving is easy. BUT,if you're on the road when the tour buses are leaving at the end of the day... it can be two wheels up the mountain as someone said. But traffic is so slow (like stopped) there's no room for mayhem.

I'm just coming back from Minori, on the Amalfi Coast, leaving from Piano di Sorrento.
Until Conca dei Marini, no problem. After Conca dei Marini until Amalfi there a lot of traffic-lights because the road is under reconstruction, there are many and many works in progress. Problems for us, during winter, so that everything is good enough since next spring
Welcome to everybody!
