Rue Greneta...safe?
 

I found an apartment on rue Greneta between rue Montorgueil and rue Dussoubs, and I'm concerned about the street...the street view shows a fairly deserted street with lots of graffiti...even though the Montorgueil area is lively and busy, I'm a bit concerned about my safety at night (I'll be alone for half my stay until my husband arrives). Does anybody have familiarity with the street?

It's a typical working class neighborhood in the 2nd. The area is safe, but not somewhere I'd stay. Graffiti is something you'll have to get used to, it's everywhere.

Have you checked out the apartments offered by Paris Perfect (www.parisperfect.com). You might find something a little more upscale you'd like in a little nicer neighborhood. They have a nice studio (Provence) in the heart of the 7th arrondissement. They require a minimum stay of 1 week.

I don't mind working class, and I know that Paris has plenty of graffiti, it's just not usually so abundant on a street like this. I like the apartment and the proximity to rue Montorgueil, but don't want to be shaking in my shoes walking home alone at night, so it doesn't have to be beautiful, just safe. I have looked at Paris Perfect and didn't find anything there...looking for a one bedroom and don't want to spend a fortune for a month and a half stay.

Have you looked at what Paris Attitude has to offer (www.parisattitude.com)?

It is not even working class. It is a totally gentrified pedestrian zone. I certainly could not afford to live there.

I found the apartment on Paris Attitude. So kerouac...would you feel safe on that street alone at night? My options are dwindling rapidly in terms of apartments, so I decided to revisit this one, as I liked everything but the street itself. I know Montorgueil is safe, but are the side streets (particularly this one) safe as well?

It is one of the safest streets in the city, unless you think that graffiti can attack you.

Part of rue Dassoubs is pedestrianized, where it intersects Greneta, but not rue Greneta.

Overthinking - you'll be fine.

I can't comment on the graffiti in a very expensive street as I don't see that much in the areas I stay, to be honest (Montparnasse usually). But as for the deserted streets, I think they often make a point to try to create those street view photos when the street is kind of deserted, it seems to me. But there isn't a reason for tons of people to be on a street most of the day if it isn't a shopping street.

Now, now, Kerouac, no need to be snide. I asked a legitimate question, I have no fear of graffiti, otherwise I would've had a nervous breakdown in Rome, just thought the street looked a bit grungy from the streetview on the map.I don't see that kind of graffiti in most of the nicer areas of Paris, nor in the other areas I've stayed in.

Most apartments in that area cost more than $500,000. I assume that in your usual areas of Paris, the apartments cost more than $1 million. Yes, a cruel decision for sure.
