Agree with all above. Rue Cler is more elegant, but to me, rue Mouffetard is more colorful. The lower end of the street (if you get there before noon) has the food vendors calling out from their stalls and is a great photo opportunity.

We stayed in Rue Amelie (Hotel Jardins d'Eiffel) last July. The area is wonderful - we had our 10 year old daughter with us, and never once felt uncomfortable walking out in the evenings. We had a room with a view of the Eiffel from our (tiny) balcony, and that was magical for all of us. Rue Cler is very special, as is Rue St Dominique, and we often bought food at lunchtime to eat in local parks. Have fun!

Kavey, I agree with Lesli, and others; Rue Cler is more elegant (after all, it's in the 7th and that arrondisment is not home to Paris's poor people :~), but Rue Mouffetard is more colorful.

But, why choose one or the other...visit both!

My 'vote' cides with Joe & Leslie; I prefer Rue Mouffetard. Maybe I caught Rue Cler on a bad day, but it just didn't do it for me the way Mouffetard did. Joe described it really well. And Rud Cler is much smaller, and all I heard was English so I thought it more touristy.

On my next trip (in 3 weeks, omg, omg!), I want to check out some other markets, such as the big organic one. The one in Belleville is quite interesting as well! Enjoy!

I know I can look this up, but does anyone know off the top of their heads, what the best metro stops are for these markets?

Particularly for the more markety food stall ends rather than the shops...

THANKS

(Will think about doing both...)

Ecole Militaire for rue Cler, Kav. They're up and running early, but everything is in full swing by 9:00 am. Crepe stand opens between 9:00 and 10:00.

Question for all of you who seem to be experts on Parisian neighborhoods.

I am planning my second stay in Paris. Stayed in the Marais (4th) a few months ago and just loved the area and the close proximity of the River. But, I'm now hearing loads of good things about the Rue Cler area (7th) and am looking for some advice. This time I will be bringing my sister who does not travel often and am tempted by the atmosphere of the Rue Cler, but still remember how nice the Marais was-near the booksellers, etc. Opinions? Should I consider another area as well?

My husband, 15 year old son, and I spent two wonderful weeks staying on the Rue Amelie(Jardins d'Eiffel)last August. We loved the 7th, felt very safe, and found the restaurants, markets, etc. to be terrific. We were between two metro stops and were close to the Seine, Eiffel Tower, Invalides, etc. A belated thank you to all for the great info we received here. We loved Paris!
