Yes, Guy, he can be irritating (not that I find the example you quoted particularly irritating - just that I do know what you mean.)

But even if irritating, he does other things well. Sorry, I should revise that to, I think he does other things well. In particular, writing for first time visitors to a place is probably the most difficult kind of travel writing. To make it look simple is no small accomplishment. In short, I guess it depends on whether you can, on balance, find him more useful than irritating.

Anthony here is just hearkening to Monty Python's famous "Is this the room to have an argument" sketch. Yes, it's entertaining.

So now the bottom line comes out. It seems Anthony doesn't really understand why anyone would enjoy visiting a typical street of food shops. Since he has so little understanding of the sorts of things that vast numbers of tourists enjoy doing with their time, what in the world have be been discussing all this time?
He doesn't understand the whole concept of walking down a typical street of markets and shops since to him there's nothing "special" about doing so. Many of us do enjoy that and do find it special even when it is a "typical" street. He resents the fact that a successful tour guide has made a recommendation that many people seem to agree with. Big deal. At least now I understand where his jealousy is coming from. He's not only jealous that people follow someone else's suggestions, but he doesn't understand what tourists enjoy to begin with.
