You're right, I don't know what the wages are for wait staff in Europe. Here in the USA they are as low as $2.25 an hour because the government figures they will be tipped. We do not tip a waiter or waitress if they give us rude or bad service. However, in my life I can only remember twice getting such service. Once in L.A at a fancy restaurant called Dan Tanna's and once in Dallas at Planet Hollywood. I look forward to being in Europe and if we get great service we will tip. I guess it's just in our blood.

Waitering does not attract well educated and traveled personnel. Management spends time training help often to no avail. Tipping now is simply a device to encourage the wait staff to be courteous. Some restaurant and bars sell jobs like a concession.

Girlspytravel - I don't consider myself thin skinned, but I am struck by your habit of never missing an opportunity to be critical of the UK, whereas you seem rarely to critisize any other country.
I deliberately tried to couch the question in a way that did not make it a personal attack.

I notice that rather than answer the question , you decide that I am thin skinned. I have several hundred postings on fodors, maybe you would like to pick out other examples of this obvious character flaw (grimace).

Feel free to critisize - it is interesting to see other peoples perspectives.

As somebody who works in the field of microbiology, I would also like to see what evidence you have for your statement "the high rate of food poisoning in the city!".

Seriously? "Fortnight" (=fourteen nights) has been around in English-speaking countries since forever. Is it really not known in the US?

Re: tipping. I generally agree with the sentiment that visitors should respect the customs of the country they're visiting, but it borders on the immoral to ask customers to pay extra if the reason for doing so is that the establishment's proprietor elects not to pay his/her service staff a fair and liveable wage.

For the price stated on a menu I expect nothing less than excellent service, and I expect the server's employer to pay that server a fair wage for giving me that excellent service. I'll happily tip if I get service beyond excellence (it has happened!), but the other side of that coin is that I will walk out if the service (or the food) is less than acceptable.

We Americans don't use "fortnight." But any American who has read a British novel, and that, I would hope, is all of us on this board, has made it his business to find out what it means. Anyway, I knew. But I teach English.

And...I really don't understand this exasperation with friendly waiters or the belief that it's pretend. Most of us here acknowledge that Americans are just a friendly bunch. Why shouldn't that extend to waiters and shop clerks? Much better than the curmudgeonly attitude that so many Brits seem to take pride in.

Here in the states, I recently had a Brit run into the back of my foot with his pram, only to have him say to me "nice work" in that supercilious accent of his. I can't imagine an American doing that. A handful of us might take out an automatic weapon and spray the crowd with gunfire. But the vast majority of us would say "Sorry 'bout that."

I love it Cimbrone, good one. Mind you, getting back to the original post, some people will pay big money to go out and be insulted. I don't know the Chinese one in London that everyone is talking about, but witness the popularity of "Basil Fawlty" dining experiences not only in UK but elsewhere in the world as well.

A theme of this thread seems to be that you have a choice between only two kinds of service: over-friendly (the waiter is your new best friend) or surly and rude. There are other possibilities, like efficient and mildly cheerful. That's true of most of the restaurants we go to as a matter of fact, both cheap and expensive. Including Chinese restaurants.

By the way, I loved this: "they speak
loudly and quickly in Chinese to each other. To them, they're just chitchatting ... To many tourists ... it's offensive because it sounds like they are fighting!". By and large, anyone speaking loudly and quickly in a foreign language sounds as if they're fighting!

Interesting discussion.

I don't particularly like the too-friendly service but I will take it over rude service anytime.

One thing that is going too far in my opinion, is when the waiter actually SITS DOWN in the booth with you (obviously at a casual restaurant)! Drives me nuts.

Neil_Oz - nope, "fortnight" is not a term used in fact, I'd never heard it before until yesterday (I'm now living in Scotland and someone asked me how my fortnight was - I thought they meant last night! hahaha)

GSteed - "Waitering does not attract well educated and traveled personnel" - I find it very offensive for you to make this statement. Many people work as waiters/waitresses to pay for their education while they are in university, and we depend on tips to supplement our income! I was a waitress for five years but this does not mean I am uneducated OR poorly travelled (I have a Bachelor of Commerce and I have been to 19 countries)

To everyone who complains about their servers being annoyingly cheerful and overly friendly - customers tend to get pissed off when you do NOT act like this and complain about their server being rude - I guess you can't please everyone

I knew full well what a fortnight was, I was just trying to be silly. It's just that if anyone in my social circle were to use that term they would never hear the end of it.
Also,while studying for her math Phd. my wife made ends meet by "waitering" and earning tips.
