Americans consulting summer 2012 information on Visas should note that there have been significant changes, for the better, under a September 2012 US-Russia agreement. Several recent postings on TripAdvisor cover the specifics in depth.

LCI, really enjoyed your TR of Russia! Like you, we are neither tour nor cruise people. But we had been thinking that if/when we visited Russia, a river cruise might be the way to go. However, you have given us some food for thought. Can we expect your next TR on the Europe forum?

Hi tomarkot...

Thanks for reading and posting! Always nice to know a TR is helpful.

After this cruise in August, mom and I went to Rome for a week in November, and I posted a trip report for that very "food-focused" trip! ;-) Here is the link to the Rome trip report:

My next Europe trip will be to Portugal in May!

LCI, we will definitely check out your Rome TR! Love Rome! And Portugal in May should be beautiful. Loved Spain, but never made it to Portugal. Have fun! Will watch out for your TR. Regarding European travel, our latest plan is for September, 2013. Will rent a car and visit Southern Germany, part of Switzerland, and Austria. Wonder if Denisea has any travel plans? I miss her postings.

tomarkot...your September trip sounds terrific. I seem to recall Denise may be working on a return to Paris in autumn, but I'm not 100% on that.

LCI, thanks for the update on Denise. Perhaps I'll catch up with her on the Paris site! Meantime, I'll be enjoying your Rome TR.

PS When reading people's travel plans and reports, there are some (including yours and Denise's) that are more aligned with the way we travel. Fun to exchange ideas.

So glad I found this.....we leave for Europe in a few weeks. We will be in Russia from May 3, we had 'hoped' to do the river cruise between the two cities but the time frame just didn't work. Maybe just as well ;-) we are not cruise/tour travellers either. But we did recently completely enjoy a Mekong river cruise so thought maybe it would be a nice way to see Russia.....phew, we will be going by train from Moscow to St Petersburg.

Visas are safely in the passport, yes it was a tedious job they sure do want to know 'everything' but after two days they were finally filled out and sent off.

Really enjoyed reading this, thankyou.

ps, we were in Spain/Portugal in January, Loved it.

Glad to hear my trip report was helpful to you. I've been following your Christmas/New Years trip report and enjoying it great, especially the Portugal portion!

Enjoy your time in Russia, I'm curious to hear about train travel there, that was probabaly how we should have done it!

5* hotel... You are lucky not to take some Cognac. ))))))) And, please, avoid street yellow cabs, if you don't want to spend descendent money. It is better to order a taxi via i-net or phone. ATM is also not the best choice, especially in public places. To be sure in safety of your money use only ATMs inside banks. It is a lot of them in Moscow.
