Royan, France

Has anybody out there been to Royan? We'll be staying in Royan this June and would appreciate any tips/advice anyone can give me. I've already been to two Royan and surrounding area web sites, but would love some first-hand knowledge.

Thanks!

My wife and I stayed in Royan for 2 nights in May 2001. It's a pleasant beachside resort with all the buildings post World War 2 vintage as the town was heavily bombed.
We found some great seafood restaurants facing the beach. The market is interesting and is open 6 days/ week. If you have a car then drive to the lighthouses and Brouage (an old fortress from which the ocean has receded). A longer drive but worth it is to La Rochelle a very interesting and pretty seaside port.

I visited the Royan area some years ago with my family. You don't say whether you're travelling with kids but,if you are, there's a very good zoo at La Palmyre a few miles north of Royan. Also you're not too far from the town of Cognac where you can visit one of the brandy company's sites (Hennessy, Courvoisier). The town itself is also quite pleasant.

Thanks for tips. Will most likely visit Cognac, Brouage, and La Rochelle. We don't have kids, but still may visit zoo. And, we'll probably shop at the market daily (except the day it's not open of course). Our friends own a small house right in town. Can't wait!

Thanks again.
