Royal Windsor Horse Show?
Hi, Fodorites.
Has anyone attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show? I'm interested in learning about the different breeds of horses, a little history of their uses (carriage vs warfare vs riding, etc.), and certainly would love to watch some of the beautiful dressage riders and the jumpers. But I'm no horse expert, so wondering if there'll be much of educational value to me. Thanks in advance! |
I did once decades ago -- I'm a 'non-horse' person but my ex put himself through college teaching Western, English and Dressage (mostly i suspect because most his students were attractive college girls ;) ) and he went almost every year while we were living i England.
TBH I don't remember all that much about the 'educational factor' but saw the late Queen receiving a trophy and Prince Philip driving his carriage. I loved the Carriage Driving and the dressage. |
Horse shows are not educational. They are wonderful to watch. You could go for half a day, and look up what classes you will see on line. Then look up info on those classes. E.g. hunter under saddle vs. jumper vs. pleasure.
You could also go to a horse show local to you and do the same thing. I actually like small local shows better than the big fancy shows. |
I think the RWHS has judging classes for breeds in the outer rings, a bit like Crufts or the Westminster for dogs, but I am not sure you can learn much about the breeds from those show rings, or about what is going on with the carriage driving or dressage if you don't already understand them a bit. Show jumping is easier to grasp.
I spent years as a scorer for dressage competitions and never saw all the subtleties the judges did. If the weather is fine it can be a pleasant thing to attend, but perhaps only if you are very horsey. |
We have a major horse show coming up in Basel as well, in case anyone is interested in watching some of it during a visit here.

Thanks, all, for the insight. It does somewhat confirm what I was seeing from YouTube videos, etc. I think it may be a go for me, and I'll hope for nice weather. I think I'd love to see the carriage driving and a dressage exhibit after seeing the dressage horse and rider at the Versailles stable during their practice. Just beautiful. Show jumping might stress me out.
Thanks for mentioning American horse shows. I was dubious there'd be any near me, but was surprised to learn the U.S. Dressage Festival of Champions isn't too terribly far from Chicago, in Wayne, IL. Looks like a pretty facility, too. Might be nice for an August weekend. |
