Royal Horseguards Hotel -- London
 

Help! I've seen dozens of great reviews of this hotel on this site and tripadvisor. We just booked an executive room at 88GBP including tax and breakfast. Apparently, the really nice rooms are the deluxe rooms at this hotel. Are the executive rooms still decent? I've also read that some rooms have some traffic noise. Can anyone recommend a specific side of the hotel that might be quiet. Sadly, we're light sleepers. Lastly, can anyone recommend some good restaurants nearby? Thanks in advance.

It's been a few years but we stayed at the Royal Horseguards at the beginning and end of our 2000 trip to Europe. I believe both rooms were executive and they were very nice. We thought the hotel outstanding, a great location and wonderful service.

The rooms had all amenities you would expect in a deluxe hotel and were a nice size. Of the two, I would say the room we had with a view of the river was quieter, although the second room had a lovely old balcony overlooking a church on the street side. I don't remember there being alot of traffic on that street but then I bring a white noise machine with me everywhere to block out noise at night.

Sister and I stayed there in April 2003 and I did post, in response to peoples' questions, a couple of times on this forum about it. We loved it. I believe ours was the "Exec." room, but it was lovely. I do get the floors mixed up but it was on the one above the ground level lobby, first floor? Quite large, twin beds, marble bath with a very long bathtub,2 nice comfortable chairs and a small table between them, a desk, and french doors looking onto a balcony, unuseable but we could open for fresh air, nice drapes, overlooking the garden and the river. Room had a safe and coffee and tea-making kettle. I was a bit concerned with the embankment road just a ways from the hotel, but we were not disturbed by noise at all. Loved the room where breakfast was served and the bar, although small, was cozy. Nice lobby with fireplace. All in all, a very quiet, pleasant and cozy experience. And it also felt "English".

I always recommend that people travel with ear plugs and an eye mask as they can mean the difference between a good night's sleep and no sleep at all.

I just did a quick, short search for rates here and came up with 120GBP for August.

Though it doesn't seem like it from the action on this board, I keep wondering whether tourism to the UK will be down this summer because of the dollar...and whether that will translate to some deals that show up in the coming months.

Royal Horseguards is a good hotel - short walk up to Trafalgar Square and lots of restaurants in the area. Terrific English breakfasts. Our room was quiet but didn't overlook the river.
