Royal British Hotel - Edinburgh

We are looking into staying one night in Edinburgh (arriving by train) for a family of four. We don't want to pay much and want something central to Waverly Station. I have found a family room at the Royal British Hotel for 140 GBP. Any input on this hotel? I know it's only a 2 star hotel, but we don't care as long as it is clean. Thanks

You probably know the site already, but just in case you don't - there are some recent reviews and a few candid photos at tripadvisor:

Another seemingly "too good to be true" is the Travelodge Edinburgh Central. The location seems great and the price of 59 GBP for a family room is unbelievable. Is this a case of "too good to be true" and the place is really a dump or in a seedy area?

Just in case you need another idea, try the Jury's Inn. It is just over the bridge from the train station. Maybe a 5 minute walk. We stayed there a couple years ago with our family of 4 and it was fine. Not fancy, but clean and decent, in a good area, and not very expensive.

Touristbob, I assume you are referring to the Travelodge and not the Royal British Hotel? Thanks for the post. mms, I will check into the Jurys Hotel to compare, thanks.

Just returned from 10 days in Scotland and stayed at the Travelodge in Edinburgh when we could not get into the Ibis, etc. The locaton just off of the Royal Mile, the rooms were clean and even though our room was at the front of the hotel, we never heard any outside noise since the St Mary St. is a side street. We walked from there to everywhere, and also took an open-topped bus to get oriented to the city. Rode ontop in the rain and it was great, for soaking (!) up the atmosphere (the only rain we had in 10 days in Scotland I might add). You can't beat the rate which was 1/2 of the Raddison a block away. They offer breakfast for another 6 euros I think but we were tired of "fried" breakfasts and found great scones at a neat tearoom , Clarinda's, named after Walter Scott's "muse" I think; or Plaisir du Chocolat for cafe au lait and goodies which just around the corner on the Royal Mile. Anyway, don't know about the other places but the Travelodge was fine. We decided to save money in Edinburgh where we knew we would be out a lot. we saved our budget for places in the country where we wanted to soak up more atmosphere and just hang out in a castle.
