Rovinj vs Opatjia

Currently we have reservations for two nights at Hotel Lone in Rovinj. We have friends who have stayed in Opatjia and loved it. Doe anyone have a preference for one city over the other? Rovinj is an extra hours drive from Plitvice, where we are driving from. Not that an hour is a lot! I am fairly certain that we cannot go wrong with either location.

Thanks, Alison

You could spend the first night in Opatija and the next in Rovinj, where will you go afterwards?

I did not like Opatija at all. With the exception of the Villa Angiolina, Opatija seemed to me to be a mass of overpriced and overloud resorts, restaurants, and bars. (I thought the area, and the Lungomare, well worth seeing; I stayed in Lovran, which I enjoyed, but it may be a bit too out-dated to suit all tastes.)

I thought Rovinj a much better base for exploring Istria. It has a good tourist infrastructure (so it has a decent array of options for lodging and dining) and it has some very beautiful corners. I thought it well worth seeing and have no regrets about spending a couple of nights there. And that extra hour's drive will take you through/by some of Istria's lovely hill towns. Many people drive through that area just for the pleasure of doing so!

Enjoy!

Hi, they are completely different in look and feel. We preferred Rovinj, it is more attractive with a Venetian/Italian influence, in food and architecture. Opatija is much more Austrian and has lots of 'wedding cake' style hotels in pastel colours, as well as the Austrian influence in cakes and coffee etc. If it was us and we could only pick one place, it would definitely be Rovinj but if you have time, it's worth staying in both. The walk along the Lungomare at Opatija was good, it's just a paved path that runs alongside the waterfront but is nice for strolling. We caught the bus to Lovran and walked back.
