Rothenburg (Germany) at Christmas 2024

Hi everyone - I'm heading to Rothenburg in Germany next month as part of a Christmas trip. Has anyone been before and can make any recommendations of what to see or do whilst I'm there? I've got about 2 full days in total. Would love suggestions!

We were in Rothenburg ob der Tauber this September. It's a gorgeous, remarkably well preserved medieval town. I have no experience in December, but I can imagine the Christmas Market must be very atmospheric. Our only "Christmas" experience, was visiting Kathe Wolfahrt's Christmas Store and Museum, operational throughout the year and very charming. While you will inevitably gravitate to the glorious town square and the altstadt (flanked by impressive town gates/towers), we also enjoyed walking the walls (offering several vantage points over the town, a small portion is closed) and panoramic walks outside the city walls through vineyards.

I've been several times at Christmas. Walking the wall is interesting, as is walking outside the walls. You might enjoy the Watchman's tour and the Medieval Crime Museum. Then again, just wandering the Christmas Market is a lot of fun too.

Here's my trip report from when I took my neice there at Christmas in 2018. It might give you some ideas - we were there for three nights.

Rothenburg starts at post #24.

Quite coincidentially, I was just thinking about that fabulous butter cake I had at Café Uhl this morning!

Kate,
The main pharmacy in Rothenburg used to set out a unique and educational window display every Xmas.
It was a collection of B&W wartime imagery depicting the before/after of controversial bomb raids on the village (see 'Bomber Harris').
I do not know whether this display has continued through til the present day, but if so, its worth a looksee.
I am done. The end.

One of the best towns to visit for the Christmas Markets, loved the Crime Museum. Expect HUGE crowds.
