Rothenburg

Will be staying with Karin Weiss this April and was wondering if there is enough to see and do in this area to warrant a 2 night stay.

I think it would depend on what time you will arive at Rothenburg. It is extremely crowded with day-tripping tourists, but I found it very enjoyable in the evening, after most had left the place, and in the morning before people arrived. I would stay there two nights in order to enjoy those times, but not everyone likes to just wander around like I do.

Be sure to take the night watchman's tour, though. It is fun. And there's a wonderful altar by Tilman Riemanschneider in the church of St. Jacob. I'm not interested in the Kriminal Museum, but many find it interesting.

Pegontheroad, what time does the night watchman's tour start and finish? Is it feasible to do it and then head off back to our hotel in Heidelberg by car?

The English Night Watchmen tour starts at either 8:30, or 9:00 p.m.and lasts for about an hour.

I wouldn't want to head back to Heidelberg
that late - it's about an hour and a half, if you're cooking on the highway.

Just returned from Germany last night, including a two night stay in Rothenburg. Two days is a good block of time to set aside for this area, avoid being there on Sunday if yu are intertested in shopping, majority of stores are closed, including the Christmas shops. If you can arrive by late morning then one night is enough. The true atmosphere can best be enjoyed after the day trippers leave. Be sure to do the Nightwatchman's tour and just spend time wandering around and enjoying the ambiance. Dinner at the Hotel Markesturm was wonderful.

I agree with the other posters!! 2 nights is perfect! Don't think I'd want more and with one night, you just wouldn't get a "feel" of the town
