Room near Castle

My husband & I have tickets for the Military Tattoo in August. We would like a place to stay that is walking distance to the castle for 2 nights. Do you have any suggestions? We like B&B or small guest houses but hotels would be OK too. Don't need anything realy elegant just nice.

I hope you won't think this unkind, but you're missing the magic word: Edinburgh, I asssume.

Offhand, I think there have been plenty of recommendations for people in your situation. The forum search facility seems slow to catch cup, but it might be worth trying a search on "Edinburgh" and see what comes up.

Whoops, yes I should have said Edinburgh. That's what happens when you get up at 4am to call for almost 3 hours in order to get tickets for the Tattoo! THanks

We stayed at a fabulous B&B in Edinburgh called "2 Cambridge Street".

The B&b was within easy walking distance to the castle, and set on a quiet street without a lot of traffic. The rooms were extremely comfortable, with nice bedding and beautiful antique furnishings. The wonderful owners cooked us gourmet breakfasts in the morning, and were very helpful with recommendations, directions, etc. If you need more info, just let me know.

If you are willing to spend 100 pounds a night, consider the Elmview, my favorite B&B of all time. Gorgeous rooms, fabulous breakfasts and friendly hosts. It's in a quiet residential neighborhood, 10-15 minute walk to the castle and Royal Mile.

Don't dally. Edinburgh fills up fast in August.

What is your budget? You do have lots of time yet - but as Mimar says, nice places do fill up months ahead. And prices are raised for the Tatoo/Festivals period.

janisj Jan 7th, 2008 09:29 AM

Oops - hit post too soon. And some places will impose a 3 night minimum.

PHayden Jan 7th, 2008 10:55 AM

Yes, I thought that rooms might fill up fast during the festival times. I plan on booking this week to make sure we have a room while we are there. We were planning on only 2 nights and will be getting a rental car to tour Scotland once we leave Edinburgh. We were in Edinburgh last September and visited the Borders region as well as Britain, Wales & Ireland. We just did not get enough of Scotland so we are going back this year.

Budget?

PHayden Jan 7th, 2008 03:09 PM

I would prefer to stay under 150 pounds per night for 2. I emailed 2 Cambridge Street and they are already booked. I have emailed Elmview but have not heard back yet. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Only if you are very fit since it is the top two floors of the bldg w/o a lift. But if you can climb 3 or 4 flights of stairs. They will carry your bags up. But because of its unparalleled location it is very popular, so it may also already be booked up

Thanks, I will try it too. Walking up the stairs would not be a problem as long as they carry the luggage up.
