Ronda and Pileta Cave

We’re seriously considering one itinerary change for the Andalucia portion of our trip. We’re thinking of eliminating a two night stay in Tarifa (with a day-trip to Tangier), in favor of a two night stay in Ronda. Between Granada and Cadiz we have two nights to fill.

Here’s the dilemma: If we stay in Ronda, we’d like to visit the Pileta cave. We plan on arriving in Ronda by train or bus. I’ve already emailed the tourist bureau at Ronda and they’ve replied that there are no organized tours from Ronda to the cave. I emailed a week ago to ask if there are daily car rental agencies in Ronda, but have not had a reply.

Does anyone know if there are car rental agencies in Ronda? Or, is there a day tour company leaving Granada that goes to Pileta cave and Ronda? Would it be possible to do this sort of tour and just depart from the group in Ronda and not proceed back to Granada?

Finally, is there another town between Granada and Cadiz, serviced by public transportation that we should consider for two nights instead of Ronda?
Thanks.

Hi, kathleen -

I don't know if this information will help, but when I visited Ronda some years ago, someone at the tourist office told me that I could hire a taxi to visit the cave. I don't remember the estimated cost - just that it was beyond my comfort zone at that time, particularly as I was traveling alone. I do remember thinking that it wouldn't be unreasonable if several people were sharing the cost.

Ronda is lovely. I don't think you'll regret stopping there.

Hope that helps. . . .

Two nights in Ronda is far superior to a rushed day trip to Tangier! I loved Ronda the most of my short visit to Andalucia.
I'm sure you'll be able to find a one-day rental. The Hotel San Francisco offered car rentals.

kja-
I agree. A taxi could cost more than we'd want to pay too. Somewhere I read 50 Euro, then the USD exchange rate on top of that. I just don't know.

yorkshire-
Thanks. I will check with the Hotel San Francisco (about lodging too, since we haven't booked yet). Their website seems to be down, but I'll keep checking.

People on this board keep saying Ronda is wonderful, and say very little about Tarifa and Tangier. I'm taking the hint...

Re:Car rental in Ronda. After checking on other forums and booking sites, I’ve discovered that there are a few hotels in Ronda that do have car rentals (at least that is what is listed online) and that there are a couple of car rental agencies. I contacted three of the hotels and booked our lodging at one of them, Hotel San Francisco. However, I still didn’t receive a definitive answer to the car rental question, even from them. I believe my request was translated incorrectly to be asking for a place to park our rental car at night, which of course is not the case. I’m just going to assume that in mid week there’ll be something available. I have no idea what a daily car rental cost will be as I didn’t get that far in the questioning. If it’s more than the cost of a taxi to the Pileta cave, we’ll take the taxi- no problem. Anyone have any idea of a daily car rental cost?
