ROME, where to stay?

We are looking ahead for our cruise
next year, and we are leaving from
Rome, so we would like to spent two
nights in the beautiful city.
The hotels I have checked are from
$300 up., and I would like to know
if you have any suggestions, or
maybe some tips of where to look for
a nice, comfortable and located in
the heart of the city, and not so
expensive. We are going to Rome
on May 1st. After reading what I wrote it seem almost impossible.
THANKS for the help.

We liked Hotel Parlamento:

Central location, nice rooms, good service. There are lots of reviews on Trip Advisor.

Try the Daphne Inn. We've stayed at the Veneto location twice. It's a great place! http://www.daphne-rome.com/

If it were me, I would stay around the Centro Storico, i.e., the area around the Pantheon or Piazza Navona. If you are in a decent physical shape, you could walk almost anywhere.

We stayed at the Albergo Santa Chiara during both visits but it would probably be more than $300 by now.

Just keep in mind that your time in Rome will be limited and it may be wiser to pay a few extra Euro than to stay in an out-of-the-way place and commute.

We Loved the Empire Palace Hotel. It was an oasis after the tour grind all day. It's not far from the train station and has tons of food and shopping around it. And the breakfast included with the room is fantastic.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel San Carlo a few years back and found that its price and location were wonderful. I think we paid around $175/night. They were slowly renovating the hotel, so we had a newly remodeled room, which had a large bathroom, by European standards. The Hotel San Carlo is right by the Spanish Steps in the shopping district.
The only downside was that there was no working elevator, so we did have to walk up the stairs. However, we were only in our room to sleep, so it wasn't too bad. That may have changed by now.

the locando Senatorum was fantastic, reasonably priced, and less than 2 minutes away from the Pantheon, right in the middle of the hisotric centre.

I just checked the rates for the
Locando Senatorum Hotel, and they were
$300, for one night, a double room.
Too expensive., so I will keep
looking. Thanks

MN:
Was the Parlamento that high?!

If so, they've really gone up since their renovation. Too bad. I don't spend that much either.

Let us know what you find.

Consider a B&B instead of a hotel.

There are some listed at http://www.b-b.rm.it/
and the agency has a good reputation.

MNPAGES,

Check out the Genio and the Residenza Canali. Both are located at Piazza Navona, and should be below 300 E.

We stayed at the Genio several years ago, and the Canali in April of this year. We were happy with both.

Last Sept, we stayed at a lovely small hotel called Residenza Antica Roma, located on via del Tritone, near Piazza Barberini. We walked to Navona, Campo Fiori, the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps.. and also used the bus, primarily to get to the Baths of Caracalla.
A double or twin in high season is 190€ ($294US); low season is 100€

Byrd:
I always assumed the Geneo was more expensive than $300. I love the location, about a block from Pza Navona on the river side.

One of our favorite restaurants, FIAMETTA, is in the Geneo building, ground floor around the corner.

Jeanne,

We stayed at the Genio several years ago in February, so the rates were quite affordable. (I'll try to find my notes to see just what we paid.)

However, I have researched hotels for friends within the last year or two, and I believe the high season rates weere fairly reasonable.

I'll check and see what I can find out. I don't want to post any bad information!

I just checked the Genio, and a double room, including breakfast, for the night of June 25, 2008, is available for 155 Euros.

Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?

Genio's rate does sound good but most of the reviews from 2007-8 do not...unfortunately.
