Rome - Where to stay
 

Hi,

I will be travelling to Italy with my Husband on 30th September 2012. We are flying to Naples and staying in Ischia for 3 nights, we will then be taking the train to Rome for a further 3 nights before then flying to Budapest for 3 nights also.

I have booked the hotel in Ischia and Budapest, however i am stuggling with Rome. We havent got a massive budget im looking for somewhere like a B&B or Apartments for around £200-£230 for the 3 nights (not per night) I want to go and see the vatican museums, therefore i was originally looking at the Vatican B&B which is just round the corner from the vatican its self however im not sure what the nightlife is like around the Vatican area. I have recently seen posts for people staying in Termini and heard that its busier of an evening but not as safe as Vatican?

Could any one recommend what areas/B&B/apartments would best suit my needs? I want to be close to the vatican or around 15minute walk away but somewhere with a decent nightlife not clubs etc.. just nice barsd and restaurants that arent too pricey either?

Unless you plan to spend all three days at the Vatican, I would stay somewhere more central. I would not stay in the Termini area (surprised anyone is suggesting that).

Hi Amanda, Here are 3 of the hotels where DH and I stayed that MIGHT (because it's been some years now) be of use:

On our first trip, the Nova Domus was pretty basic. It was about a 15-min walk to the Vatican Museum. The immediate area seemed to be working class but we found quite a few restaurants in the area:

On our next trip, we loved Hotel Isa. It had a more central location than Domus and was very near a square with many bus lines. More going on at night in that area also:

On another trip, we found Hotel Principe Di Piemonte to be the least expensive and most basic. It was 5 minutes to the tram which got us around better/easier than busses. We weren't thrilled with the restos in the area but the staff was very helpful. Also very close to train station. Google it and make sure you are get the one in Rome.

Other Fodorites can help you with Trestevere area or other well-prices places. Good luck!

I went to www.venere.com and put in your budget and approximate dates. There were several choices, the most convenient being near the Stazione Termini, an area I don't recommend but isn't terrible. (Do check the exact locations on a map; hotels have been known to exaggerate by quite a lot. )

The other option is staying in a convent. There are a number that rent rooms at a very reasonable rate. Here are a couple links: www.monasterystays.com and www.santasusanna.org/comingToRome/convents.html.

Hi Amanda, I agree with kybourbon, I would avoid Termini area and head towards the centre, not necessarily find the most expensive hotel there. I would suggest you to try http://www.hotelraffaello.it a 3 star near Colusseum and Fori Imperiali and they serve breakfast all day long so you can sleep!

its a litle out the way but only a 15minute walk to the vatican and good transport links, was cheap too and very good reviews on tripadvisor. I hope it is ok.
