ROME: What section to stay?
 

Hi. My husband and I will be traveling to Rome in June/July 2003 and was hoping for advice on what section of Rome to stay in?

We would like to walk to sites/meals as much as possible ...

June/July 2004. Staying for 3-4 nights.

I think staying near the Pantheon is perfect. Were there just a couple weeks ago and we walked to everything - Forum, Colosseum, Vatican, Trevi Fountain, Borghese Gardens, Spanish Steps, etc. NEVER took a cab except to and from the airport. Stayed at Albergo del Senato and had a wonderful visit.

I agree with Wendy. Pantheon location is perfect. It is right in the middle of all the sights. We also stayed at the Del Senato a few weeks ago and highly recommend it.

Pantheon, Pza de Spagna,Pza de Popolo, Trevi, Pza Navona, Campo di Fiori are all so close toether no more than 15 minutes between any of them, I don't think it makes much difference, I do not like the Via Veneto or Vatican area..but that's me. And for a view from my room I can pass on that , I'd rather be in the scene than looking at it!

I agree with Jody - we were just there and stayed in the Via Veneto area. It wasn't really far from things, but it was a healthy walk to everywhere we wanted to go.

I wish we had been more in the center of things, near the Pantheon or PIazza Navona.

I just stayed at the Piazza Navonna area and loved that but as others have posted the Pantheon is equally as nice.

Have to agree with the Pantheon area. We stayed there and found evrything within easy walking distance, a genuine neighborhood feel and lots of decent restaurants nearby.

I agree with everyone else. We stayed atthe Santa Chiara near the Pantheon and our room had a 14x14 balcony over looking a court yard. The price was good also.

The Santa Chiara is our #1 choice right now for our trip to Rome next May. Do you have any more insights on the hotel and suggestions on the type of room? My husband and I really enjoy balcony's to relax on.

agree with staying near the Pantheon. Many folks here seem to love Albergo del Senato.

I always stay in the Campo dei' Fiori district in Rome. It is very close (walking distance) to the Pantheon, the Roman ruins, Piazza Navona, etc. There is a lively, bustling daily market (every day except Sundays) from 7 am until 1 pm; and jazz bands and music nightly while you eat your dinner on the open piazza. It has become increasingly popular with both tourists and young Romans alike over the last several years - and for good reason - given its central location and neighborhood feel in the heart of a big city. I love the Campo area - it is one of my favorite places in Rome.

We stayed in the Trastavere neighborhood on the other side of the Tiber. It was only a few minutes' walk across the bridge to Campo de Fiori, Piazza Navona, etc.

What we liked about this part of the city is its village feel. Think Greenwich Village in NYC or Lincoln Park in Chicago. More residents than tourists. And the place was hopping at night, which was lots of fun.

We stayed in the Piazza Navona area and loved it....we stayed for 4 nights and walked to all the major sites...we never took public transportation to any of them and walked to all the restaurants we went to. Would highly recommend it.
