Rome vs Naples to get to Sorrento question
 

Hi. I'm researching a trip next March to the Amalfi Coast, probably to stay in Sorrento. Flights into Rome are a little cheaper, and get in about 4 hours earlier, than flights to Naples. So I'm wondering about things like how easy it is to get from the airport (FCO or NAP) to the train station and then on to Sorrrento. At first I was thinking Naples made more sense to fly into. But that involves one extra plane change, so maybe it makes more sense to just fly into Rome and train on down. Any advice or opinions.

I think the convenience of Naples is negated by the extra plane change. I'd fly into Rome and train down.

we just returned from italy and the train from Rome to Naples worked great. We used the EuroStar as it is faster and less likely to have a strike ( like the local Circumsuvia train did while we were there )
We had a driver take us to Sorrento but I know the bus or train would work as well.
If you can afford a driver it was a fabulous experience for us.
Sorrento is great and don't forget a Capri day !

Hi Isabel - All things being equal, Naples is more convenient as it's only an hour's bus ride to Sorrento.

The Curreri Airport Shuttle (€ 6.00) direct to Sorrento takes about 1 hour.

However, if Rome has the cheaper flights you can train down to Naples from FCO via Roma Termini - continuing to Sorrento by Circumvesuviana.

Journey time from FCO airport will normally be close to 4 hrs.
Total fare € 40-50 (- depending on train type ES or AV)

isabel, to me, it's easier to have a plane change than have to get from FCO to Termini, then on a train to Naples. I would fly into Naples (which is what I plan to do next July) unless the price difference is really big.

Thanks all. Steve, are you saying there is a shuttle directly from Naples airport to Sorrento for only 6€ ? If that's the case then it does sound easier than Rome. I was thinking that you'd have to get from the airport to the train station in either Rome or Naples and then train on to Sorrento. If that is the case, then it seems to be about equal to do one extra leg on the plane versus one extra leg on the train so I'd go with which ever got me there first (assuming relatively equal pricing). But if that shuttle is only 6€ and goes directly from the Naples airport then that looks better. Do you have any more information on it (like a link, or how often it runs, etc.). Thanks so much.

Just returned from two wonderful weeks in Italy. We started in Rome. Took the Eurostar Rome to Naples. This takes no time at all. The cabins are very comfortable, with a beverage service. You can go on-line and look up the schedules in advance. When we arrived in Rome, we decided to take the local train to Sorrento (Circumsuvia). I would not recommend anyone take this train. We were very upset that we had not hired a driver. First, you go downstairs to catch the train. The escalators were broke, so if you have suitcases, this is really difficult.
When the train arrived, it was packed! No seats available, barely room to stand with luggage. The train was old and filthy.
I too had read in advance that you could get on more of a direct train that doesn't make all the stops. We happened to be on one that stopped at every stop. The ride took over 1 hour.
When we arrived at the last stop, Sorrento, no escalators, and had to carry our suitcases up and down flights of stairs.
We got smart on the way back to Rome, we hired a driver.
My advice, research hiring a driver.

Isabel - I can't swear the Curreri transfer is still €6.

Can't see the current fare on the website - it might be €8 by now.

Good value and convenient if your arrival time fits - and it will save you lugging baggage on the Circumvesuviana (- the alternative public transport option).

Alternatively the going rate for a taxi to Sorrento is approx € 90

You can get schedules and prices for Fiumicino/Rome TE and Rome/Nap at http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html.

The Circumvesuviana train from Nap/Sorrento is about 1 hr.

I'd fly into NAP for 100E pp more.
