Rome/Venice Train Costs

Does anyone know the approximate (or accurate) cost of one-way and/or roundtrip train between Rome and Venice 2nd Class? I have been searching all the sights recommended and no-one has that info right now (some are actually down/suspended). Any info appreciated!!!!!!

It was $42 1-way 2nd class in April 2001. I don't imagine it's changed much since then; maybe $45.

First class travel is well over $j00 per person, and second class is nearly $100. For $200, I'd consider renting a car in Rome and making the drive to Venice. Including rest stops, the total time is only about 6 hours or so. When you arrive in Venice, turn in the car if you plan to stay overnight, and reserve another car for when you leave. When you get ready to leave Venice, assuming you are staying over for a day or more, rent another car and drive back. If you like to experience the scenery and the towns along the way, this is a much better way to go.

I should have added that the $200 figure assumes that two people will be traveling. If only one person, go by train. If more than two, the savings become enormous if you go by car.

Rome to Venice 1 way second class costs EUR 44,93 on the fastest Eurostar Italia (ES) trains. This includes a seat reservation. Journey time on the direct ES trains is 4,5 hours. There are also slower IC trains on the route which take an hour longer and cost EUR 35,89. You can get all the schedule & fare information on www.trenitalia.com While most of the site's english version has been down for months, the schedule function (upper left hand corner of the home page works fine. Enter "Roma" as departure and "Venezia" as arrival station. The results page will show you connections arriving at both Santa Lucia ("VE S.L.") and Mestre stations - you want Santa Lucia. However almost all trains continue to S.L. from Mestre. To see if this is the case with a particular connection as well as verify the price, click on the connection number or the little white triangle on a red background on the left hand side of each conection ("select" column). This will show you all the details you need to know. I wouldn't rent a car - factor in the tolls/gas, not to mention the aggravation of finding your way out of Rome and the train always comes out ahead, except if you want to spend a few days touring along the way. Not sure where Wayne got that 1st class price, but trenitalia.com IS available as of this hour, and it lists 67.14 euro each direction. 4 hrs 32 minutes; easily 2 hours less than driving. Best wishes, Rex

Hi Maria Trenitalia lists 67E ea way 1st cl: 45E ea way 2nd cl on the ES* Reservations are required (add 3E) trip takes 4:32 On the IC (5:32 trip) rates are 47E and 36E, respectively.

what do you get for 20e more in 1st class?

A bit more room, more recline, more plush.

Rex: I dnot agree on getting fist class, in particular on Eurostars: the added comfort is little, while the prices are fiar highier. At least on Eurostars I would stick to second class in any case. Actually I stick to second class on Intercities as well ^_^.

My answer was not meant to advocate first class nor second class. It all depends on what 22 euro is worth to the traveler making the decision. The question asked what does it get you. I think I provided a suitable answer. Your opinion is not wrong for you. Someone else's opinion will be right for someone else.
