Rome vacation
Spending a week in Rome in October and would like to go see my ancestral village of Montella and also the Amalfi coast.
Is renting a car in Rome and driving there the best way? Is there perhaps a better way to get there?

GAC (just enter the screen name in the search box) recently posted a number of well-researched itineraries to the Amalfi Coast that you might find helpful.
The general consensus is that it is not a great idea to drive the Amalfi Coast, but you might well have to rent a car somewhere (preferably inland!) on the coast to drive to Montella. There may be buses from Naples, but a car seems easier and more comfortable.

Hi AD,
Driving from Rome to the AC is not recommended.
Take the train from Rome to Naples and the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento
OR
Train from Rome to Salerno and take the ferry to Amalfi.

For your visit to Montella, I suggest that you rent a car in Sorrento. It's about a 1 hr drive.

Hi . . I agree with IRA . . don't drive unless you've made a name for yourself on the NASCAR circuit. Take a train and relax. It is not recommended to drive in or around Rome or Paris. You'll understand once you get there. Have agreat trip.

Hi ades,
I looked up the SITA bus schedule.
There is bus service Salerno/Montella.
The bus leaves Salerno at 14:20, arrives at Montella at 16:25 and returns to Salerno at 16:35.
Not Good.
See http://www.sita-on-line.it/CampaniaO...Quadro%20V.pdf
There is fairly good service between Salerno and Acerno. You would have to take a cab to Montella.
www.viamichelin says it is about 15 min.
Hope this helps.
