Rome: transportation from FCO to Spanish Steps

Three of us will be traveling from FCO to our hotel near the Spanish Steps. Other than a cab, what are our transportation options? We will be arriving on a Thursday morning. Also, if you could only do one day trip from Rome, using train transport, would you choose Orvieto or Cortona? I will be with my 2 college kids and we would love to explore a quaint scenic town. Thank you!

I would take the train, the Leonardo Express, from FCO to Termini Station. Then a taxi from Termini to your hotel.

Tickets for the train can be purchased on the approach to the train platforms, from the ticket office and, if there's a line, from the little shop just beyond.

The Sitbusshuttle used to drop near Castel Sant'Angelo (behind it - listed as Vatican stop) which isn't too far from the Spanish Steps. You could walk from there, but you might not want to. It's the cheapest option.

You could take the Leonardo Express to Termini (14€ each) and then the metro to the Spanish Steps (1.50€ each), but that would total 46.5€ for three. A limo service from FCO to your hotel for three can be cheaper than that. Rome Shuttle Limousine charges 45€ for three people.

Cortona is too far for a day trip (2 - 2 1/2 hours one way). I would stick with Orvieto (about an hour).
