Rome to Volterra on a Sunday

I am having a terrible time trying to figure out how to get from Rome to Volterra and on a Sunday, no less! It looked like the best way was to take the train from Rome to Cecina and then a bus from Cecina to Volterra, but now I am only finding bus schedules from Monday - Saturday! Help! Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

Are you checking only Trenitalia for trains - I think Volterra is also served by a non-Trenitalia train line.

Rome2Rio.com is usually pretty accurate, but you should always verify the information for your specific dates. There does seem to be 7-day bus service from Pontedera to Volterra on CPT (Compagnia Pisana Transporti) Line 500.

But what will you do in Volterra without a car?

Volterra does not have train service. Many buses in rural Italy don't run on Sunday. You can see there is little service.

At the bottom of the volterratur link, mouse over by bus and a list of possible connections appears.

Oops I got Volterra mixed up with Viterbo, to which I took a train. Sorry.

So it looks like a more solid plan may be to go to Florence, on to Pontedera and Volterra from there. I was also looking into a taxi or driver from Cecina to Volterra. Any recommendations or thoughts on that?

What's your goal? Quickest, easiest (fewest connections) or cheapest?

A driver or taxi would be expensive, but if that option is on the table, then consider starting the drive from Florence. That would cut out at least one connection and take the least overall time.

There should be a possible solution: train to Cecina, a bus run by trenitalia (only two running on Sunday) to Saline, then transfer to CPT urban bus to Volterra.
For example, on Sunday, May 25th, the two possibilities would be:

Roma Termini 7.57 - Cecina 10.08 Frecciabianca
Cecina 10.20 - Volterra Saline 10.59 Trenitalia bus
Volterra Saline 11.00 - Volterra 11.25 CPT bus

Roma Termini 14.12 - Cecina 17.26 Frecciabianca
Cecina 18.06- Volterra Saline 18.43 Trenitalia bus
Volterra Saline 18.45 - Volterra 19.05 CPT bus

The key timetable is at:

but before committing to a trip without a possible backup if anything fails I would check twice with the Volterra tourist office. Of course, it may be possible that after June timetable change.
