Rome to Siena by car

Rome to Siena by car
We are renting a car in Rome on Sat. April 1st and driving to Siena. Looking at the map, it appears that we have several options of routes. Any suggestions for the best route for "first-timers"?

Yes, we will be driving through Tuscany. We will spend Saturday night in Siena, then drive to Florence on Sunday for 1 night. Our Monday morning plans are not set yet. We just need to be in Pisa in time to see the tower (per our daughter's request) as we fly out of Pisa early Tuesday am. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Why are you renting a car? It's not obvious. All of these places are easily accessed by train. You will find it next to impossible to park in any of these towns except Pisa. Most don't allow cars anywhere near their important historical centers.

The train is relaxing - true - but part of the idea is to have a bit of closer contact with the countryside. With a car you can take short side excursions and in any case get out and walk about. I would strongly recommend that you take route 222 from Siena to Florence rather than the toll road. Check www.castelli-del-chianti.com for side trips. You will pass through Castellina www.castellina.com , Panzano www.panzano.com and Greve www.greve-in-chianti.com. If you have time, midway on your route between Sienna and Florence, detour 5 km to Lamole and eat lunch there - the view is psectacular. www.lamole.info

Thanks everyone! Yes, the main reason for the car is for the possibility of side trips. However, I am concerned about parking issues. Our hotels in all 3 towns have parking available (at an additional cost), although I am uncertain of how much space they have available. I will call ahead and confirm.
