Rome to Sicily and back to Rome - which airline?
We have a flight booked to Rome in October arriving on a Sunday and have decided to spend the first week or so in Sicily. We want to fly Rome to Palermo as soon as we arrive in Rome. We will travel in Sicily and the return Catania to Rome on a Saturday. It looks like Wind Jet, Blue Panorama and Alitalia are the only airlines that fly these routes.
Any advice on which is the best airline given the fact that I want to book these tix on-line from the US now? We are flying to Rome on a Delta ticket (but an Alitalia flight) and arriving in Rome on a Sunday. The price for Alitalia tix are exhorbitant - 350 USD pp each leg. The best schedule is Blue Panorama and it will give us about 2 hours from the time our flight lands at Fiumicino. Is this airline reliable? Thanks! |
Try Easyjet usually very good service and very good prices.
Fly FCO to Palermo |
We had no problems with Wind Jet.

We used Blue Express. Booked through wegolo.com. No problems. I might give myself more than two hours though, just to be on the safe side.

skyscanner.net best rates
easiest to book from US for me Booking in advance will save a lot... |
I have used many price comparison sites over the past few years. Someone directed me to skyscanner when it was in its very early stages. It is very price competitive.
I have absolutely no idea how these things work but it frequently integrates with expedia to produce better routes prices than the same requirements keyed directly into expedia. Low cost operators always need to be booked well in advance. I am finding the reverse with large scheduled carriers which seem to offload capacity closer to departure. |
I used Skyscanner. When I found the fare I wanted, it automatically directed me to wegolo.com.

Alitalia would be ideal. You could just check your bags through to Palermo. But....
Immigration can be very slow at Fiumicino, plus you'd have to retrieve your bags and drag them over to the other terminal. 2 hours would be the minimum I think, allowing also for flight delays. |
Be sure to check the baggage allowances on the airlines you're considering. The cheaper fares might turn out to be more expensive once you checks the fees.

I have always flown Alitalia from Rome and Milan to Sicily.Sometimes discount airlines are not always the best deals!

Have flown Wind Jet and Alitalia on the Rome-Sicily routes - both perfectly fine (except when diverted due to some erupting volcano called Etna, but that's another story!).

We flown Alitalia Rome-Palermo. I checked now the prices for October; for Economy Promo return ticket , the price is 189 $ pp
