Rome to Prague - doable?
 

Has anyone ever done both Rome and Prague in a short trip such as 10 days? Is this possible or are they too far from each other?
I think I'm either looking at two overnight trains with a stop at a midpoint like Munich or Vienna, or a simple flight from Rome to Prague. It just seems like alot of time wasted travelling. Thanks for the advice.

Yes, you can do it: 4 nights Rome, 3 nights Prague.

Kirby - It's actually only about 2 hours or less flying time - so I suspect Ira's quote is via Milan or Venice.

Volare airlines are the budget airline flying this route. You might get a cheaper quote booking direct:

SkyEurope, on http://www. skyeurope.com, fly from Milan to Bratislava. Volare do not fly from Rome or Milan to Prague. Rome to Milan by expensive train takes 5 hours, and by InterCity takes 5 1/2 hrs: Bratislava to Prague takes 5 hours. Both journeys are available as 7 hour night journeys.

Last summer I went to Prague to visit family, then flew to Rome for 4 days, then took a train to Venice for 3 days. It was completely doable. While you could spend much, much more time in each city, Prague is small enough to spend 3 or 4 days in, and you can get a feel for Rome and see many sights in 4-5 days. Sounds like a great trip--have fun! If you want any info on Prague I used to live there...

Ben - There are Volare flights from both Milan Malpensa and Venice to Prague on certain days of the week - according to their website.

Both start from € 39.99 + Tax.

Volare also fly Rome-Venice starting at € 29.99 + Tax.

So the Venice route could be done cheaply if dates are flexible - with a possible overnight in Venice.

I flew between Rome & Prague several times last summer. Not a long flight. Used Czech Airlines. Not a big deal at all, so if those are your chosen cities, fly there & use the time saved (by NOT taking a train) to enjoy the sights.

The Volare flights are so inexpensive I almost can't believe it. Is there a catch?

If going by train I would certainly allow for a stop in Venice or Vienna. While in Prague make sure you take at least a day or two to spend in Cesky Krumlov. For max. in the two though, take the plane.

Like other budget airlines Volare quote fares without tax. You get the 'actual' fare once you select and confirm a flight on the website.

Budget airlines sometimes have an excess baggage charge which can be quite steep, and they charge for refreshments.

Otherwise no catch, - but for the lowest fare you usually have to book WELL (months)in advance, - so book ASAP. The nearer you get to departure date before booking, the higher the fare.

Thanks for everyone's help. I found some cheap tickets to go to Prague w/ a free stopover in Rome. That worked out great! Four of us will be going to Prague in late March '04. To keep costs down we'll be looking at a 2 bedroom apartment instead of hotels. I'd really appreciate some input from anyone who's done this. Are there any disadvantages of getting an apartment for 4-5 days? Thanks!

Where did you find your tickets?

Apts usually rent by the week. I think that you will have some difficulty for a 4-5 day rental.

Actually I came across them through bestfares.com which I must admit was sort of a hassle but ended up well. They posted a story about fares to Europe w/ a free stopover in Rome or Milan. Since they post the absolute lowest fare possible, we had to be very flexible with the dates and also fly only Monday-Thursday. Plus I had to join bestfares for $60. But in the end we got tickets from JFK to Rome, Rome to Prague and from Prague to JFK in March for under $500 each (including tax, etc. and the $60 membership fee). We are flying Alitia the whole way.

When in Prague, I prefer renting apartments, and always rent them short-term. Places that I have used that will offer 2 bedroom flats for short-term use are:

Any of those would be good, and can also arrange an airport transfer, etc..

Good luck. (Also, UNLIKE Rome rentals, in Prague you are not expected to pay a cleaning fee at the end of your stay!)
