Rome to Positano via Salerno

My wife and I are thinking of taking the train to Salerno and from there boarding a ferry to Positano.
I have obtained details and cost of the train trip to Salerno, from the Italian train site

A couple of questions I would like to ask the list though:
1) How close is the ferry terminal to the railway station?
2) How long is the journey by ferry to Positano and is there a website that shows departure and arrival times as well as the cost.

Thank you.
Richard.

Richard - The ferry dock is 500m from Salerno railway station, at Piazza della Concordia jetty.

The ferry takes 70 mins from Salerno to Positano, with a brief stop at Amalfi en route. Fare is €6.00.

Summer ferry departures from Salerno are normally at:

08.40
09.40
10.40
11.40
14.10 and
15.30

But you should confirm these times before you travel. The new 2004 timetable will be online in a few weeks.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Steve a belated thanks for your answer.
Do you have the website where these times will be posted.
Thanks.

If you want spectacular views - take the bus from Salerno to Amalfi, then another to Positano. It's a breath-taking ride, and the buses always have the right of way around corners etc. Takes 70 minutes to Amalfi, I think, and another 45 to Positano, but well worth it!! If the sea is at all choppy, the ferries don't run because of docking problems.

If you are coming from Rome, it's actually faster to get off at Naples, take the Circumvesuviana train 1/2 hour to Sorrento, then 1/2 hour bus to Positano ( also good, but the views the other way were great!)

Thank you Amanda, if the seas are choppy we will certainly go by bus.
I understand that the bus depot is reasonably near the train station.
If we do travel to Positano by ferry we can always return to Salerno by bus.

Which side should we sit, to get the best views, if we do travel to Positano by bus?

Thanks.

Does anyone know what time is the last ferry from Positano to Salerno?

Steve_James May 26th, 2005 04:04 AM

FTP - Currently the lasts one leaves Positano at 18.30 - but times change during the season, with more frequent services in summer.

You can find details on this link:

Hope this helps ...

Amanda, when I got the train to Salerno it did not go via Naples. To get to Amalfi, at least, I thought that getting a train to Salerno then a bus was quicker & more straightforward than going via Naples & the Circumvesuviana.
