Rome to Positano

What is the best way to get from Rome to Positano? We were thinking of renting a car but was wondering if there were other options? Thanks.

Hi rr,

What will you do with the car when you get to Positano? :)

I would take the train to Salerno and the ferry to Positano.

Very scenic ride on the water.

Many hotels on the coast offer parking, either free or for a charge. If they do not have their own lot, they will direct you to the nearest one. Inquire about this when you make your hotel booking.

My family trained to Naples from Rome. Driver met us at station and took us to Positano. Went very smoothly. I recommend Giovanni with www.tourofitaly.com. A real hoot. He drove us back to Naples via Pompei. Have a great trip.

Thanks for all your help. I will lok into the driver and renting a car and see what works best

One more option would be to take the train to Sorrento and a bus from there to Positano.

Hi RR - Another inexpensive hassle-free option from Rome is the Rome-Positano bus service (- operator: Marozzi) - which operates June-Oct.

Fare: € 20 p.p one way
(€ 34.50 return)

Dep 07.00 Roma Tiburtina
Arr. 11.30 Positano

For details see:

Hope this helps ...

Yet another option is to take the train to Naples and then to take the ferry from Naples to Positano. It's a really scenic trip, and much less expensive than hiring a driver.

Arriving in Positano by water is the best way imho. It's breathtaking.
(Visit http://www.metrodelmare.com/ for the ferry schedules.)

We stayed in Sorrento and took the bus to Positano.

We then went to Rome and found that taking the train from Sorrento (which goes through Naples) to Rome was the easiest way for us. If you buy the tickets in Italy - it is more cost effective as well. Trains are very clean, comfy and on time.

It really depends on your budget. The most hassle free way is to have a driver pick you up right at your hotel in Rome and drive you straight to Positano. We too used Giovanno from Tour of Italy. He was great. Actually my daughters thought he was the highlight of our trip! It is a great ride. He stopped along the way for pictures and to a great restaurant for lunch.

It is around a 3-hour drive. If you take the train to Naples, I believe once you get there, it is an 1 1/2 drive to Positano. It was great to just put the luggage in the car and go right there.
