Rome to Positano
Hello
I am looking for advice on getting from Rome to Positano. I've read that we could take the Eurostar from Rome to Salerno, and then the hydrofoil from Salerno to Positano. Will we have a problem getting from the train station to the hydrofoil? (We'll have luggage). Also, is their a website to book tickets on the Eurostar in English? Lastly, will the train from Rome to Salerno be direct, or will we need to switch trains? |
The website for Italian trains is www.trenitalia.com. You can't book more than 60 days in advance.

From your other posts, I see that you are considering some expensive hotels, so I am assuming money is not an issue here. If that is the case, do yourself a favor and arrange for a car and driver to meet you at the Naples train station and drive you to Positano. In the first place the drive is absolutely spectacular, esp once past Sorrento (it is the famed Amalfi coast drive after all). In the second, with luggage it is so much easier than switching trains and then getting down to and on and off the hydrofoil.
Some places to contact which have been reccod on this board are below. I have used the first one several times and always been pleased: positanocarservice.com www.cuomonet.it www.sorrentolimo.com www.benvenutolimos.com |
You have a number of choices. Take the direct IC or ES train to Salerno (2.5 - 3 hours), then you can take a bus (SITA) or the hydrofoil. Alternatively, take the train to Naples (2hrs) then the Circumvesuvian train to Sorrento (1 hr), then the bus to Positano (40 mins). But if you have the funds, I would do as Cicerone has proposed, take the fast train to Naples, and a car to Positano (but not a local Napoli taxi - arrange something in advance). It is a spectacular drive (but not for the fainthearted)

ps If you are staying in Rome, ask your host/hostess to help with the bookings !

Yes, do have a driver to take you from the Naples train station for Positano. It is the easiest way and if you get a good driver then it is a wonderfully educational, not to mention breathtaking, experience. As far as booking tickets ahead of time. I worried and worried about that before our trip last year. Well, we had no trouble just buying our tickets when we arrived at the train station. Have a ball!

Thank you so much -- invaluable information. Now I know to take the train to Naples, and hire a driver, and thanks so much for the recommendations on drivers!
