Rome to Positano
 

We'll be arriving in Rome and going on to Positano in May. I would appreciate any advice on transportation since this is our first visit. Thank you. Betty

There are several ways to get there, but this is how I would go:<BR><BR>1. Intercity or Eurostar train from Rome Termini Station to Salerno<BR>2. Ferry from Salerno to Positano<BR><BR>The Ferry landing dock is approx. 600 yards from the Salerno station.

I also recommend the train from Rome, although I would take it to Naples and then arrange to have a car service drive pick you up here and drive you along the Amalfi coast to your hotel in Positano. Take the early morning train from Rome (about 8:30 am) and you will be in Naples at 11 am. This is the most fun and relaxing way to do it, and the drive is incredibly beautiful. There is lots of info on this site on car services, I have used Positano Car Service ([email protected]) which was recommended on this site. The trip cost about US$100. Well worth it in my view.<BR><BR>If you have a lot of luggage, going to Salerno by train and then getting on the ferry is not really fun. There are stairs in the station, you have to get your bags onto the boat, and unless you have arranged for your hotel to meet you at the pier, you will have a long walk uphill to your hotel with your bags. The ferries are great for getting around, but I wouldn't use them for getting to and from your hotel unless you are on a stricter budget.<BR><BR>For train information for Italy, go to treinitalia.com.it or Raileurope. I recommend the Eurostar as they are express trains and a bit newer than the intercity trains for the most part.<BR>

We used a car service from Positano to Naples train station. then took train back to Rome. worked out great and low on stress. Car service was www.tourofitaly.com. 2 hours to Rome by train.

We took the train from Rome to Naples and had planned on taking the train from Naples to Sorrento, then the SITA bus. Glad we did not! In Naples train station a taxi driver offered to drive us to Positano in an airconditioned Mercedes, so we took him up on it. Guess we were perhaps too trusting, but it worked out very well, and we had him return a few days later to drive us from Positano to Naples, all going well again!<BR>So I second the above suggestions of hiring a private car/taxi!<BR>If I were 18 with a backpack, I might try it the other way, but that's years ago!
