Rome to Pisa then Florence?
 

Hi, I am trying to sort details for a trip next May. We (3 ladies in 60's) are staying in Rome for 5 days (have organised accom) then the plans were to Florence (2days) and Venise (3 days) but was wondering if it is possible to travel from Rome to Pisa for the day and then to Florence for o/night and the next day. What is the train trip like from Rome to Florence? It looks like it goes right along the coast and would be nice but??

I wouldn't give up a day in Rome, Florence or Venice to visit Pisa.

I agree with Ira. I liked Pisa but not enough to take a day from Rome or Florence for it.

However, Pisa makes an easy daytrip from Florence. If you feel you must visit Pisa, I would leave in the morning from Florence (about 1 hour by train), see Pisa, and be back in Florence by mid-afternoon.

Going Rome to Pisa is tough. The best bet is to go Rome to Florence and then to do Pisa as a day trip during your stay in Florence. Rome to Florence is an easy 1.5 hours on the fast train. Florence to Pisa is only a 1 hour train/bus ride. And despite what some people say, Pisa is great and should not be missed, but only for a half day.

The route touches the coast at several points and is pleasant enough.

Hi SandM, I'm a real Pisa fan (have stayed there twice!) but I too would have reservations about taking time away from your brief Florence stay. I'd go ahead to Florence then see if you have any extra time for a 1/2 day to see Pisa. David, Ponte Vecchio, Duomo, Uffizi, Bargello were my faves in Florence and that would be 2 days right there! Hope to hear what you end up doing!

Having spent a night in Pisa qualifies, I guess, for an opinion here: skip Pisa. Go to Sienna or Assisi or spend the time in the bigger cities. Obviously some people dig Pisa but it really didn't do much for me.

Thank you everyone for your input. All makes things a little clearer for me. Have decided to go Rome-Florence and will think about trip to Pisa, dependent on other two ladies.
